Description - This program is part of the worldwide Bible-teaching ministry of Thru the Bible. The series was originally designed by Dr. J. Vernon McGee and has been translated and adapted into more than 100 languages and dialects. It is intended to be a daily 30-minute radio program that systematically takes the listener through the entire Bible. Now those same programs are available to you online. We are grateful that you have chosen to begin learning more about God's Word by listening to these programs. It is recommended that you now listen to at least one program per day, Monday-Friday. If you will continue do this every week for the next 5 years you will have studied through the entire Bible.
In this episode of Through the Bible, we delve into the powerful teachings of the book of Hosea as Dr. J. Vernon McGee guides us through the trials of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Ignoring God's word not only led to spiritual adultery but also brought about God's judgment in a dramatic and prophetic transition. As we reflect on the message shared by the evangelist D.L. Moody and stories from Dr. McGee's own ministry, we're prompted to consider the essential role of scripture in our everyday lives. Throughout Hosea chapter 4, we witness the consequences that befell Israel when they neglected their sacred texts. Dr. McGee draws parallels to modern times, illustrating how turning our backs on divine guidance can lead to moral decay and personal dissatisfaction. Whether through personal anecdotes or deep scriptural insights, this episode calls listeners to introspection and a return to God’s word. Join us as we uncover the inhibitors to spiritual fulfillment and the inevitable consequences of idolatry and sin. Whether you are a long-time believer, a part of our World Prayer Team, or someone in search of spiritual clarity, this study provides profound insights. Prepare to embark on this enlightening journey through Scripture with renewed understanding.
SPEAKER 1 :
The foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith.
SPEAKER 01 :
The evangelist D.L. Moody was right when he said, The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible. Listening to and obeying God's Word is a protection over our lives. And that's one reason that I'm so glad that you're here at Through the Bible, ready to get into God's Word with Dr. J. Verna McGee. And as you know, we're in the book of Hosea on our five-year journey through the whole word. And in this study, we're going to learn how the northern kingdom of Israel turned away from God because they forgot his word. Well, not only did they forget it, they wanted nothing to do with it. They completely turned their backs on God's ways. And you know, that's when God's man Hosea stepped up and said, my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge of God's word. And then he relayed God's chilling consequence. Because you forgot the law of your God, I will also forget your children. I will change your glory into shame. Wow. I don't know about you, but that sobering pronouncement makes me sit up and listen. We're in Hosea chapter four. So as you open your Bible, let's listen to Dr. McGee's introduction on why God will judge his people.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now God says that he must judge the nation. And he says that he will change their glory into shame. Now the glory of Israel was actually the temple with the Shekinah glory upon it and his visible presence with the nation and his definite leading of them. And they're witness to the world of that day of monotheism. In a world of polytheism, they worship the living and the true God. That was their glory. It brought the Queen of Sheba from the ends of the earth. Now what is happening is this. God says, I will remove my glory from you. I'll remove my blessing from you. And I will judge you. I'll let the enemy come in upon you and take you away. And of course, the enemy is going to be able to say, look, they said they were God's chosen people. And look what's happening to them. And apparently their God's not a very strong God. Friends, we're seeing today in this land of ours something very similar to that. God is judging many churches and he's closing many doors today. You can look about you in this land of ours and see that God is still judging. And we are inclined to say, isn't it a shame to see a decline in a certain church? Well, maybe God closed the door. We need to recognize that only God today can afford to judge his own people, and he does that.
SPEAKER 01 :
Before jumping into our study, I invite you to join our World Prayer Team. Together we pray for listeners like Nora in the Philippines who writes this. I heard your message and want to know if you will really be forgiven. I have sinned in the past and I have thought that I am unforgivable. I got involved with another man and our entire village knows. I'm hurting and crying right now, but your words in my language of Locano comfort me and give me hope. For the first time, I feel as if God might accept me as I am. Please tell me what to do next. Please tell me more about Jesus and how I can be redeemed. Are you ready to join us for the journey? Well, hop aboard as we pray for millions of listeners like this one all over the world by signing up at ttb.org forward slash pray. And let's do that now. Thank you, Heavenly Father. Thank you for the privilege of hearing your word. Help us to turn what distracts us and do what pleases you. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of sharing your word with the world. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. We're off to Hosea 4 on Through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
SPEAKER 03 :
Now, we got down last time through the sixth verse of the fourth chapter of Hosea. And again, I'd like to say that this sixth verse here of this fourth chapter is considered one of the most familiar verses that we have. It's one that is quoted a great deal. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. And that's the way it opens. I went through it last time, and I'll not go any farther than that. But it was a lack of the knowledge of the Word of God that was the background of the sin of these people. The minute that Christian friend, you get away from the Word of God, you could not live a triumphant Christian life by any means. You could not live well-pleasing to the Lord. And I do not care how many of these method conferences you go to that have all these little gimmicks that if you do this and do that and do the other thing, that things are going to work all right for you in your home and in your place of business and in your social life, and everything will work out right. My friend, the Word of God makes it very clear that That's not by these little gimmicks, these little methods. It's by a knowledge of the Word of God. Now, that is as clear as the noonday sun in this book and certainly in other places. Now, will you notice as God continues to bring against the northern kingdom his judgment upon them, that is, he hands down a decision. He's going to judge them. And he has now proven that To them, his case, they broken the Ten Commandments. He went down the list and they had broken them. Now he says, as they were, verse 7, as they were increased, so they sinned against me. In other words, as the nation increased, God had promised to bless them by multiplying them. He told Abraham that. But all it did was just bring another sinner into the world. And after all, that's what happened when I came into the world. Just another sinner came into the world. But thank God, the grace of God reached down and somebody gave me the Word of God. And I was able to trust Christ as my Savior. But these people, they have an ignorance. They have no knowledge of the word of God. As they were increased, so they sinned against me. Therefore, will I change their glory into shame. God says, I'm going to turn your glory into shame. They eat up the sin of my people. They set their heart on their iniquity. They not only sin, but they like to brag about it. As a young fellow, ran with a pretty fast crowd in the bank I worked in. And we always like, especially on Monday morning, to brag about our weekend, what we did. And you know what it was, either to get drunk or... some adultery or something like that. That's what you brag about. And they not only sinned, they bragged about it. And there, verse 9 now, chapter 4 of Hosea, and there shall be like people, like priests. The unfortunate thing is that the priesthood had sunk down to the level of the congregation. Now, I have always believed, and as you've heard me say, that I started out in the ministry. I wore a Prince Albert coat and a wing collar. I look like a mule looking over a whitewash fence. But I soon gave that up. I dress just like the man sitting out in the pew. And I'm no different than that man in the pew. But I want to say this, that I want in the pulpit to give out the word of God so that I don't sink down to the level of that which is the man of the world. And today there are many ministers. They're the good guys. one man boasted to me he says you know he says my preacher says you know he says he comes out to our golf club he plays golf and i'm for that i do that i think it's great to mix with folk like that says after the game says he goes in the bar room with us has a drink with us says you know said he's just one of the fellas says i sure do like him well I wonder what God thinks about him. Like people, like priests. And I'll punish them for their ways and reward them for their doings, for they shall eat and not have enough. In other words, famine is coming to the land. And who would ever have believed that this great land of ours, just last year, a few years ago, that there would be no scarcity. Whoever heard of it, that you couldn't buy meat at the meat market, you couldn't buy bread, that there would be a scarcity of anything. May I say to you, I'm not sure. I think God judged us in the dust bowl many years ago. That's when I entered the ministry. And nobody listened to God then. Then we had to fight World War II. God judged us. And we didn't come back to God even World War II. So we've been fighting somewhere ever since. Just can't give it up. They shall eat, not have enough. They shall commit harlotry and shall not increase. You know, there's one thing, friends, about adultery. And I know today that I'm talking to a great many people that have had this in their mind and their heart because we're living in this day. And you can take it from a fellow that one time in his life before he's saved, you can never, never enjoy in a way in which God really wants you to until you can enjoy it in marriage. And when you can put your arms around the woman that you have been loving and you can say to her, I love you. above everything else in the world. Now, I say when you can say that, my friend, then there'll be an increase. And it'll be wonderful. Oh, they were committing adultery then, and they're doing it today. But actually, there's really no satisfaction in it. It's just a sort of a temporary release. And you hate yourself after that. And I know that. And some of you know that, my friend. And God knows that because that's what he's saying here. God's spelling it out for you. They shall eat and not have enough. They shall commit harlotry, adultery, and they shall not increase because they have ceased to take heed to the Lord. Harlotry and wine and new wine take away the heart. Last time we gave you all these statistics about liquor in this country today. And nobody, and I mean nobody today, is lifting a voice against this. And I don't think I've said very much about it. But I sure have said a whole lot the past couple of days. And from time to time, we do mention it. Arlatrin wine and new wine take away the heart, my friends. And part of our problem in Washington today are these two sins, harlotry, adultery, and liquor. They're the two problems in our government today. That's the reason that men lie. That's the reason that men will do crooked things. And that is not confined to one party or just one group. The whole crowd is guilty today. One writer said that in Washington, you don't know who to trust. May I say to you, what a sad commentary on our nation today. Don't tell me the new morality is working. It didn't work for Israel. They got away from the word of God and they said, we try something new. And they went in for it. The northern kingdom, you see, they had sin galore. They put up two golden calves. And with that worship of Baal, I was connected with it, the grossest forms of idolatry and the Verse 12, my people ask counsel of their idols, and their staff declareth unto them, for the spirit of harlotry hath caused them to err, and they have played the harlot departing from under their God. Now he's speaking here of the harlotry, spiritual adultery, which is turning from God. They went to inquire of idols. And today, we find people running after the gurus of India. Well, they haven't done much for India, by the way. But yet, we've had a crowd running after them. And someone has said that one of them that came over here, he said that very candidly, he came for the money. And that it was nothing in the world but a religious racket as far as he was concerned. Yet people went after him. People are going off into this type of thing today. And there's actually the worship of Satan today. I have here a clipping that comes from Daytona Beach, Florida. A group of Satan cultists tortured and beat a 17-year-old youth to death, believing he was an undercover narcotics agent, police said Wednesday. May I say to you that worship of Satan today is certainly not helping morality by any means. And these people going into idolatry, idolatry was leading them into gross immorality. Now, let me keep reading here. And They sacrifice, this is verse 13 now, chapter 4. They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains and burn incense upon the hills under oaks and poplars and elms because the shadow of them is good. That's where they put their idols, was on top of a hill under a grove. And you hear a great deal in scripture. And they found out today, archaeologists, that the center of worship of idolatry was in these groves. It was cool there, nice place to go. Therefore, your daughters shall commit harlotry and your spouses shall commit adultery. You see, the worship of idols, and we today have turned to idolatry, covetousness, All of this today, the greed of this country today has caused many a family to try to get on in the world. They want to move to a better neighborhood. They want a swimming pool. They want a boat to take down. And they say we're doing this for their children. And then all of a sudden their children take off and there are thousands. Thousands of young people today that are wandering up and down this country and all over the world. I saw them in Hawaiian Islands. I talked to three young people in Constitution Square in Athens, Greece. Two young men and a young lady. And I'm sure that none of them were beyond their teens. One of them could have been 20. And there they sat, and they were then under the influence of drugs. I tried to talk with them, and I tried to find out who they were. And they said, we're nobody. We don't count. We've dropped out. What's happened today, friends? What's taking place today? Why, the problem is back there in the home. We're idolaters. We're worshiping the almighty dollar. We've forgotten God. We've turned away from the living and true God, and we no longer worship him. And we've not turned to a savior that can redeem us and help us. Now, verse 14. He says, I will not punish your daughters when they commit harlotry, nor your spouses when they commit adultery, for they themselves are separated with harlots, and they sacrifice with harlots. Therefore, the people that doth not understand shall fall. God says ignorance, so the law excuses no one. And because these people have gone on, I'm not going to judge them for the sin they're committing right now. I'm going to judge them because they've turned from the living and true God and from his way. My friend, as I said to a man, and I met him on a golf course, by the way, and he said, joined our foursome he soon left us when he found out we were three preachers and this man made a statement well he said that he guessed that he was a sinner he'd done this that and the other said yes I guess I'll go to hell and I said brother you know you're not going to hell because you commit these sins he says what do you mean I'm not going to hell because I thought that's what you preachers said I said this preacher never said that I said you're going to hell because you've rejected Jesus Christ These people were being judged not because they had become harlots. They were judged because they've turned from the living and true God. Now, will you notice he says here, though thou Israel play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-Avon or swear the Lord liveth. God says, I'm going to hold Judah back. I'll not judge Judah yet. And Judah, don't come up and worship these calves that they put up here. Now we come to something that's quite interesting. Verse 16. For Israel slideth back like a backsliding heifer. Now the Lord will feed them as a lamb in a large place. Now, friends, let's look at what really backsliding is. A great many people think backsliding means that you have become a Christian, joined the church, and then you drop back into sin, and that's backsliding. Now, may I say to you, that's not backsliding the way it's used here. And God illustrates it so you can't miss it. For Israel slideth back like a backsliding heifer. Now, I'm very happy the fact that as a boy, I had the privilege of living in the country and in a little town. And I think I've mentioned this before. There's a live next door to us in southern Oklahoma in a little town. We lived in a rancher. He had a big ranch and he had two boys and they were both about my age. And we three played together. We used to ride these heifers out in the lot and they would, you know, tie a rope around. As we said in that day, a belly band we'd put on them. We'd hold on to that. And then they'd buck us off. Now, every now and then, this rancher would load up. This was in the days before the automobile. In a wagon, he would load up these heifers to take them to market or take them out to the ranch. And he had a great big board. That is, it was a thing constructed out of boards that he put up at the back end of the wagon. It was a runway that you just try to run the heifer up back. Well, what they'd do, you'd put a rope around the heifer, and then you'd push her from the back. And as you'd get the heifer up, she'd go a part of the way, then she'd stiffen those front feet. She'd just put them out stiff. And you know what would happen? You couldn't pull her. She'd start sliding backwards. That's what backsliding is. Backsliding heifer. They were stiffening their front feet. And instead of being led of God, they were slipping backward all the time. And backsliding means when you turn your back on God and you step on that little neck of yours and that little mind of yours and you say, I'll have nothing to do with God. You're backsliding when you do that. You see, when you refuse to go the way God wants to lead you. Now he calls Israel here a backsliding heifer. There are a lot of backsliding heifers today and bulls also, by the way. Now, let me read the next verse. Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone. Now, we come to another word here. The word backsliding is mentioned three times in this book, and you'll recall it's only Jeremiah and Hosea, and they spoke to a nation ready to go into captivity, accused them of doing this, refusing to be led of God, refusing to come to God. Now, Ephraim, that name occurs 36 times. He picks out one of the tribes of the 10 tribes in the north and applies it to all 10 of the tribes. And I frankly have never been able to figure out just how God uses that term. Is he using it in a way that is the term of endearment or is it a term of ridicule? Now, this time through Hosea, I've come to the conclusion that it's a term of endearment. It's a pet name. You see, Israel in the north had really no name as a nation. Judah in the south was really the nation. And these 10 tribes had revolted, you see. And now God gives them, I think, a pet name. And you'll find all the way through, it'll occur 36 times, Ephraim. And he says this in, I would say, a longing sort of way, but with a note of finality. He says here, Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone. God says there comes a day in a man's life that if he keeps on being in a backslidden condition, refusing to listen to God, there'll come a day when God no longer can speak to that man. Now he says to them, your drink is sour. You'll become an alcoholic if you keep at it, brother. And it's not a disease. It's a sin. Their drink is sour. They have committed harlotry continually. Her rulers love shame more than glory. And the sad thing today is that we have men in government in high places instead of using a language that is clean. And chase. They love to cuss. And they love to drink. They love the shame more than glory. The wind hath bound her up in its wing. They're carried away by every wind of doctrine. And they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices. God says, I'm going to make them ashamed before it's over with. Well, that brings us to the conclusion of chapter 4. Begin chapter 5 next time. Until then, may God richly bless you, my beloved.

We're grateful for the faithful and generous support of Through the Bible's partners, whom God uses to take the whole word to the whole world.
Join us on the Bible bus as we delve into the profound messages found in the book of Hosea. This episode uncovers the deeper meanings behind the prophet Hosea's life and name, emphasizing the theme of salvation through history and biblical context. Through a poignant letter from a listener in Oregon, we explore the difficult questions of morality, justice, and faith in our modern world, linking these struggles to the book of Hosea and its timeless counsel.
SPEAKER 03 :
The foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word.
SPEAKER 01 :
Here's an interesting fact for you. The name Hosea, who is God's spokesperson in the book that we're studying right now on the Bible bus, is another form of the name Joshua, which is the Hebrew version of the Greek name Jesus. Hosea, Joshua, Jesus. All their names mean salvation. The Old Testament men named Hosea and before him Joshua were pictures of what Jesus Christ embodied in the flesh, God's salvation. Welcome to Through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee. I'm Steve Schwetz and I'm welcoming you aboard the Bible bus as we continue together our five-year journey through God's entire word. Now, Dr. McGee begins our program by sharing a letter from a concerned listener. No doubt we all will be moved by this issue we still deal with, and it all comes down to what we'll hear about in our study of Hosea 3 and 4, that people follow destructive ways because they don't know or understand God, and that individual tragedy naturally leads to despising the truth and withholding mercy. Let's listen now to this letter from Corvallis, Oregon.
SPEAKER 02 :
As the chairman of Corvallis Right of Life, I have been involved lobbying state legislators concerning several bills. One bill we are concerned with has to do with handicapped babies being denied food and water after birth to hasten their death. In talking to legislators, the feeling among them seemed to be that it is better to let the child die, whatever the methods, to spare the family the burden of a handicapped child. After talking to them, doubt began to creep into my mind. Maybe it's better for such a child to die. Maybe God would have it this way. But I still felt sure that starvation and dehydration weren't the way. As this was happening, a baby girl was born in an Oregon town severely deformed, right to life, knew she would soon die, but fought for nearly a week to legally secure food and water. It wasn't easy. The night the baby died, I was led to read in Lamentations. Before I went to sleep, this scripture made an impact. And it's from Lamentations 4, 3 and 4. Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young. But my people have become heartless like ostriches in the desert. Because of thirst the infant's tongue sticks to the roof of its mouth. The children beg for bread, but none gives it to them. And that's the end of that quotation. The next morning at 7.30 a.m., I switched on the radio and there you were, reading the very same scripture. I took it as a sign from God to me, that this was indeed a heartless thing that is happening and removed any doubt I had. I thank you for your part in reaffirming to me what I am certain God was trying to impress on me. I also thank you for the words of your own that morning, denouncing abortion as a major evil of our time, You're probably not surprised to hear that the clergy in this community do not share your strong convictions against abortion. But with the help of God, we continue our fight against it. May God bless your ministry as it opens the eyes of many like me who are seeking answers in the Bible but stumbling along through it. We need your help so much. I appreciate that letter, as you can well understand. And may I just say this one word, regardless of the condition of the baby, to take that baby's life as murder and to say that you can take that baby's life, you're taking the place of God. And God doesn't like to share his place with anyone, by the way.
SPEAKER 01 :
Let's give the Lord his proper place in our attention now. Pray with me. Heavenly Father, thank you for your great love, for giving us what's best even though we don't always understand it. Please help your word to quicken our hearts to bring comfort and instruction and conviction. Thank you, Lord, for its truth that helps us discern truth and obey you. In Jesus' name, amen. Well, it's time. Let's open to Hosea 3 as we go through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
SPEAKER 02 :
Now, friends, today as we come to the fourth chapter of Hosea, we're now coming to a section where we're leaving the private life of Hosea. It fades into the background, and the emphasis now is upon the Lord and Israel. But I would just like to back up for just a moment, therefore, to chapter 3 at verse 1, because this, I believe, is very important. Here we read again, "...then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love cakes of raisins." Now, four times in this little verse here, you have the word love mentioned. Great many people think you have to get to the New Testament before you find anything about love. I believe that if you'd examine it carefully, you'd probably find that there's more said about love in the Old Testament than in the New. That is because, of course, the Old Testament is much longer. And there's more of it than we have of the New Testament. But it is interesting to note that there's a great deal about love. Now, I was thinking after I made the broadcast last time that this first verse here is actually an equation, a mathematical equation. And it puts it like this. God's love equals Israel's sins. And I shouldn't say equal, but God's love times Israel's sin equals Hosea's love times Gomer's sin. So you see that we do have an equation here. And out of that home, he comes now to speak to the nation, and he knows how God feels about them. Now, everything up to this point has been in the way of generalization. God has said they've sinned, that they have played the harlot. They've been unfaithful to him. Now he's going to spell it out. And you can make a comparison actually between this particular chapter and the first chapter of Isaiah. And you ought to compare it there because Isaiah spoke to the southern kingdom and then he spelled out God's charge against the nation. Now, here again, God brings them into court. He makes certain charges and he proves them. That is the message of chapter 4. In fact, chapters 4 and 5, he's saying now to Israel, you are playing the harlot. And Israel in this chapter is guilty of lawlessness, immorality, ignorance of God's word, and idolatry. And we see here in this first verse, the Lord confronts Israel with the fact that they have no knowledge of God. And then in verse 2, he spells out their specific sins. Now, will you listen to it? Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel, for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. Now, he says these three things here. There's no truth, there's no mercy, and there's no knowledge of God in the land. In other words, these people have been brainwashed with idolatry. And as a result, there was actually no mercy. And God had instructed them to be merciful. In fact, he said, when the stranger comes into your land and the poor, they are permitted to go in and glean. And God says, I take care of them this way and you're to do this. Why? Because he says, I am the Lord your God and I'm a holy God. They'd forgotten that. They were no longer being merciful. And there was actually no knowledge of God in the land. Oh, there's a great deal of religion, but no knowledge of God in the land. Now, they were breaking the Ten Commandments. Listen to this. By swearing and lying and killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break out and blood toucheth blood. Now, each one of these things that he mentions, they were breaking the Ten Commandments. Go back to the 20th of Exodus and read it. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not commit adultery." And all of this was even among their relatives, blood touching blood. They were committing all of these sins. They actually were breaking the Ten Commandments. I want to say something very carefully at this time. And will you listen very carefully? God gave the Ten Commandments which is only part of the Mosaic system, to the nation Israel. But in that, God expresses His will. The church today is not put under the Ten Commandments as a way, that is, that is not living the Christian life if all you do is keep the Ten Commandments. Now, that doesn't mean you break them. It just simply means he's called you to a higher plane, and you're called to live in the power of the Spirit of God. Now, God is not asking the unsaved world anything, but he does have a great deal to say about nations. And the nation Israel that he chose and dealt with them furnishes a pattern to the other nations of the world. Now, we have had what has been so-called a Christian civilization in Europe. It never was really Christian, but it had the semblance of it. The laws were patterned after this. And these are laws for a nation. I shall not kill. I shall not commit adultery. Among those are other things. God condemned drunkenness. God condemned homosexuality. And he has the strongest language for that. He says when a people or an individual indulges in that, and I don't care what you call it, my friend, God says he gave them up. He gave up this nation. They were guilty of that. They were guilty of indulging in these sins. We today are guilty of the same thing. There's no knowledge of God in this land. Oh, I know there's a church on every corner, and Sunday morning you can hear church bells everywhere. But of course, a very small percentage of the population go to church, and very few are actually being reached with the Word of God. There is a Gideon Bible in every hotel room and motel room in this country. As far as I know, the first thing I do when I go to a new hotel or a new motel to stay, I look around for the Gideon Bible. And I've noticed recently it's been out on the table. That is, it's been out and opened up so you can see it. Now, I do not know how much it's being read. The Gideons say they receive many letters telling of conversions. But I'm sure that a great many of those Bibles are not ever opened. I know I've been to several places where I'm convinced that the Bible had never been opened before. We're a nation of biblical ignoramuses. We do not know the Word of God today in this land. But the Watergate hearings in Washington certainly turned the spotlight on our government and actually not the one political party but to both political parties that there's corruption in this land of ours. And I wasn't quite sure whether all of the liars were sitting in the witness stand or were on the other side on the committee. And I think you'll find them in both parties. I think that you will find corruption today in this land in both parties. And the chairman of the committee was greatly disappointed in him, the way he not only misquoted Scripture, he misinterpreted it and said that the four Gospels contradicted each other. And that went out on television. And may I say to you, I, for one, protest that. Because I felt like demanding equal time, everybody else demands equal time to answer that, that there is no contradiction in the four Gospels. And when a man says that, he reveals a woeful ignorance of the Word of God. Now, I'm saying all of this to say this, that our land is in the same kind of a condition that these people were in in that day. I'm going to take just one particular phase. We're told that a few years ago that in Washington, there were 128 cocktail parties every day. And again, the spotlight that's been turned on these hearings reveals that there's drinking probably in Washington. Couldn't be more in Los Angeles, but there's been a great deal of it there. Now, I want to share with you today some facts and figures, and there are a few brave editors today in this country, but most of it's the liberal press. They follow one particular line, and just like Israel was brainwashed, Our nation today is being brainwashed by nothing in the world but propaganda and liberalism. But down in San Diego, the local paper down there had a headline, and this goes back to January the 11th, 1972. It was on the front page of the paper, bottom of the page, but it was a headline, Alcoholics Cost Area Businesses $10 Million." May I say to you, people cry out about the high cost of living, cry out about the high cost of war and high cost of government. All of that is true. But who's crying out against liquor today? No one's crying out against it. What do you suppose that has to do with what you buy at the store today? They say, preacher, this is none of your business. It's my business in several different ways. And I wish there were more crying out against this sort of thing. The pulpits become extremely silent in these matters. And when I go to the store, I'm paying a higher price for things because government, And the nation, we are engaged in gross immorality today, breaking these Ten Commandments. You don't get by with it as a nation. These commandments have been the basis of every so-called Christian civilization. And I'm not going to debate that point with anyone. Now, will you listen to this? Today they're saying alcoholism is a disease. And this has been answered by a doctor. He says, alcoholism a disease? If so, listen to this. It's the only disease contracted by an act of the will. It's the only disease that is habit-forming. It's the only disease that comes in a bottle. It's the only disease causing hundreds of thousands of family disruptions. It's the only disease promoting crime and brutality. It's the only disease contributing to hundreds of thousands of automobile accidents. It is the only disease playing a major part in over 50% of the more than 50,000 annual highway deaths. It is the only disease which is sold by license. It's the only disease that's bought in grocery stores, drug stores, and Wellmark retail outlets. It's the only disease that is taxed by the government and on and on. There's more to this. I'll just read that to you today. May I say to you, our eyes are shut to this because we've been brainwashed and the liquor interests have this tremendous control today. And as a result, our nation sinks lower and lower because we have what's called a new morality. It wasn't new at all. Israel was practicing it way back yonder. In about 700 B.C., and I wouldn't call it new morality back there by any means, they were breaking all these commandments and God condemned them for it. And homosexuality was practiced even back as far as Sodom and Gomorrah. It's the reason he destroyed these places. He judged them. And today, actually, some of the legislatures filled with men ignorant of the Word of God ignorant of this thing which has been basic for this nation of ours, and they pass legislation that makes it so that two homosexuals can get married. The liberal church says that we should not consider them sinners, And I know I speak to many homosexuals. I'll get letters on this. May I say to you, the Lord Jesus Christ says that you've got to be born again. And he can deliver you from it. These things are not diseases today. But when they're treated as what they really are, sin, then God can deal with us. We are doomed as a nation, as much as Israel was condemned and sent into captivity. And after all, they were God's chosen people. We are not. By any stretch of the imagination, we can't make that claim. But this is the basis on which God judges nations. I spent a little time there and I got warmed up on that. I think somebody today needs to be saying something along this line. But the pulpit is strangely silent in this connection. Well, one reason they never study Hosea. You know, here's one of the forgotten prophets. Now I'm going to keep on reading. Verse 3. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth in it shall languish, with the beasts of the field, with the fowls of the heavens, yea, the fish of the sea also shall be taken away." The land will languish. All of a sudden we found out that we're polluting everything today. When I was a boy, I went swimming in a swimming hole in a creek in southern Oklahoma that was as clear you could see, 25 feet to the bottom. My friend, may I say to you, it smells to high heaven. We polluted the land today. The land here is mourning. And then another very interesting thing is a few years ago, it was plenty. All of the granaries were filled with grain. It was plenty of everything. And may I say today, we're hearing something about scarcity. You see, when God judges a nation, the land is involved, and even the beasts and the fowls have to suffer for the sin of man. And they are suffering also today because of man's sin. Verse 4, Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another. For thy people are as they that strive with the priest. What has happened? Why, the priest in that day was not doing his duty. Not warning the people. And God had raised up the prophet. What about that? Verse 5. Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother. That is the nation. Why? Because now even there were the false prophets that were rising up and telling people, well, everything's going to be all right. This thing's going to work out. We live in a new day. The Bible is an old book in the Ten Commandments. They belong to the past, to our grandfathers and grandmothers. But we today have reached a very high plane. May I say to you, we are a dirty lot. We have sunk very low today as a nation and as a people. Now, verse 6 is probably one of the most quoted verses. It's considered to be one of the most familiar verses. I'm reading now Hosea 4, verse 6. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. That's the reason we're teaching the Bible today. That's the reason we're going into a book like this, is because, my friend, it's the ignorance of the Word of God. They're destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because thou hast rejected knowledge, I'll also reject thee, that thou shall be no priest to me. You see, God intended the whole nation. to be priests unto him. And in the millennium, they will be that. But God says, you're not even going to have priests at this particular time. Seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. That is, even the people of the nation, now God says, I will also forget you. Because you've forgotten me. In other words, they've come to the time of judgment because they've gone through a long sordid history of departing from the Lord. Now, I'll have to leave off there today. But you can see how important this chapter is. And we hope, though, to finish it next time. Until then, may God richly bless you, my beloved.

It's a sobering reality that we see the people of Israel in Hosea's time and also in our culture turn their backs on God. Augustine said it so well. Spend some time thinking about what we've studied. And as you do, why don't you confess to the Lord how, at many times, you've forgotten Him as the priority of your life. And then tell Him that, as of now, He's first place again. You know, there's more to learn from this great book of Hosea. And as always, if you'd like to listen to this study again, or any other study from our five-year journey through the whole Word of God, all of Dr. McGee's studies are available in our app or online. The story is told about a wonderful problem a Christian home for children with special needs was having. A chapel speaker told the children about how one day soon Jesus was coming in the clouds and he would gather up his children to meet him in the air. Ever since then, said the schoolmaster, we've had a terrible time keeping the windows clean. The children are glued to the glass, watching the sky. Well, welcome to Through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee. I'm your host, Steve Schwetz. And, you know, I love that story. We can learn a lot from those kids. So full of faith and ready for the Lord to call us to be with him in the clouds. Well, in this study, we're also fixing our hope on the soon return of our Lord Jesus Christ. We're about halfway through the Old Testament book of Hosea in chapter 3. Beginning in verse 4, you know, the last words that Jesus gave us just as he was ascending into heaven were words of instruction about what we should be doing while we wait for his return. Acts 1 8 records them. He says, but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to me. And you know, we're doing that now as we take the whole Word of God out to the whole world, and you're helping us. Followers of Jesus are being built up in their faith, and those who don't yet know Him as their Savior, well, they hear of the hope and assurance of everlasting life with God. So before we jump into our study, I want you to hear from a few of those whose lives are being changed by the whole Word of God here on Through the Bible. First, we got a note from Jim in Illinois. I've really enjoyed going through the Bible for several years, Jim says. And then he goes on. I'm recently divorced, living in Illinois, and unable to attend church due to the fact that I gave up my only vehicle to my ex-wife, and there is no public transportation to my house on Sundays. I would like to eventually be a chaplain somewhere. I know I am called to some sort of ministry. I'm 63 years old, but still planning my future with God. I'll keep riding the Bible bus as long as I have ears to hear." Well, it's great to have you with us, Jim, and I'll be sure to save your seat on the Bible bus. Now, here's a note. This one's from Stephanie. She's in Maryland. I came to Christ in November 2014 while listening to Dr. McGee in my car on my way to work. I was so lost and searching for the truth, but through you, God showed me the truth. God changed my life and, as a result, changed my two daughters' lives as I raised them in Christ. My husband told me that he could not take me being a Christian any longer because He said I was very different, didn't drink, and didn't even listen to the same music since I'd started listening to Christian music. Over time, he became very abusive and was cheating on me with multiple women. Sadly, I received a protective order against him and a divorce. But not to feel sad for me, but praise God because he held my hand the whole 18-month process. Without Jesus, I would have been just as wicked throughout the process as my husband was. Instead, I await the return of Jesus. Thank you for sharing your story and your journey, Stephanie. We're glad to have you as part of our Through the Bible family. Now, our final note comes from a listener in Kenya who joins us on the Bible bus in his language of Swahili. He says, My family and I heard your programs and chose to follow Jesus Christ. I'm an old man now and cannot read, but listening, I am growing in faith and teaching my family. We fellowship in the house after dinner and pray together. You are in our thoughts and hearts. Isn't that great? If you want to learn more about how you can pray for listeners like these worldwide, visit ttb.org forward slash pray. And to share the story of what God's doing in your life, contact us in our app, also by email at BibleBus at ttb.org or write to us at Box 7100, Pasadena, California, 91109. in Canada Box 25325, London, Ontario, N6C 6B1, or call and leave a message at 1-800-65-BIBLE. We really do love hearing from you, and we're not the only ones. When we share a story of how God is moving in the lives of His children and those seeking Him, everyone listening is blessed. So please consider reaching out. Let's pray together now and get to our study. Heavenly Father, we're grateful for your grace and how you extend your blessing across the earth, drawing people from every tribe and every nation to yourself. Please deepen our understanding of your word as we listen. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Open to Hosea 3 as we go through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
SPEAKER 01 :
Now, friends, we're back in this third chapter of Hosea. Now, this is a very brief chapter, has only five verses here, yet this is actually one of the great prophetic passages in the Word of God. And you will find that you have here the past dealings of God with Israel, His present dealings with Israel, and His future dealings. Many of you were with us when we went through Romans. You will recall that I consider chapter 9, 10, and 11, being the dispensational section, deals with the nation Israel. And you have in the ninth chapter the past of Israel, and in the tent, the present of Israel, and in chapter 11, the future for the nation Israel. Now, these two verses right here, you've got this all compacted into one, and they say what? Precious things come in little packages? Well, may I say that powerful things do too. Take the atom bomb and take these two verses here. They're tremendous verses. Now, I got to the fourth verse and got into it, and I want to deal with this now. manner in which I did last time because I didn't have time to even finish it. He says, for the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king. Now, we mentioned the fact here of this problem of many days, and we were going to talk about it today. If you'll notice, it doesn't give the number of days. And this is unusual because the children of Israel were told that they were to be put out of that land three times, and they would be returned three times. And each time God put them out of that land, he told them how long they would be out except the last time. Now, he said, first Abraham, I'm going to put your children out of the land. I'm going to give you this land. It's yours. But I'll put you out of the land for 430 years down in the land of Egypt. Then you're going to come back. They did. That was fulfilled, literally. Jeremiah said to them, because of your sin, you're going to be sent into captivity to Babylon. You'll be down there 70 years. Now, Hosea is speaking to the northern kingdom because they actually never return. And there's many days. They'll abide many days. Well, how long is many days? Well, right now we have some that are saying that the Lord's going to come by 2000 A.D., And I don't know where they get that. I always feel like these fellows must have a private line in the heaven that I don't have. And I guess maybe I'm a little jealous because I'd like to have that private line also, or at least know what the number is. But they got the number. Some say now 2,000. And there are others saying, I know one, I have a tape of a message he gave. And he says that This generation living today is the one that's going to see the coming of Christ. I'd like to know where you get that. May I say to you, that sounds good today to a lot of untaught Christians and those that are sensational mongers today. And we have those. We have a lot of prophecy mongers about today. But the children of Israel shall abide many days. How many days? And why didn't the Lord give the number here? Because in this interval, while they're out of the land, and they went out in 70 AD. And they actually have never returned to the land according to the word of God. Now, hear me very carefully, because this is very important to see. They have returned to the land today, and it's remarkable what has happened over there. But it's not the fulfillment of prophecy, because the prophecy says when they return, they'll return to God. And it's the belief now of several outstanding prophetic students, that is two men I know, that believe they may be put out of that land again before you have really the fulfillment of prophecy of their return to the land as a nation. And when they return, they'll return to God. Now, will you notice here, they have no king. The children of Israel shall abide many days without a king. We mentioned that last time, without a prince. We mentioned that. And without a sacrifice. And that's where I left off. And that's where, really, I want to put in today. Now, a great many people are saying to me, they said, well, Dr. McGee, you have quoted the scripture in Luke 21. that Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. We must be at the end because now Israel has Jerusalem. Now, guess where I want you to hear me very carefully. So easy today to jump to conclusions, you see. Now, I want to say, first of all, I believe we're living in the last days. And somebody says, well, you mean then the Lord will be coming soon? I don't know how soon, because we've been in the last days for 1900 years. And the Lord Jesus said, behold, I come quickly. And that is 1900 years ago. So I'm not prepared to say it'll be tomorrow or next week or next year or in this century. I just don't happen to know. But I do believe we see the setting of a stage today. when action will begin when the church is removed from this earth. Now, the reason the date's not given here is that the church is dateless, nameless, timeless. You see, we're a heavenly people, have no name, but some of you folk thought it was Baptist, and some others of you thought the name of the church was Presbyterian, and even some of you thought it was Methodist, and some of you thought it was independent. But I have news for you. Church has no name. Never was given a name. Ecclesia just means a called out body. And he's calling out a body that's going to be his bride. I could make a suggestion to you. The church in the parable of the pearl of great price, the church is, I think, the pearl that this merchant man, Jesus, came and he bought it. And he paid a big price for the church. And I'm not going to go into that today other than to say this, that the word for pearl is margaritas. And if the church has any name at all, it's Margaret. That may astound you. I bet you never heard of a church that was named Margaret, the Margaret Church. Somebody says, what church you go to? I told a fellow one time, I said, I go to the Margaret Church. He thought I was kidding him. I really was serious about it. I think that's the name of it. And it was down here, Daedalus. If you had met Simon Peter an hour before the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost, Why? And you'd said, do you know what's going to happen here in a little while? He'd said, no, what's going to happen? He didn't know. Church came in existence, dateless. The birth was announced, but not the date of it. And the time of the rapture, you are not given any date concerning it. And because of that, the children of Israel are going to abide many days without a king, without a prince, without a sacrifice. Now, let's come back to this. Do they have Jerusalem today? Well, may I say this to you? All of the holy places in Jerusalem, old Jerusalem, are in the hands of either the Muslims, either the Russian Catholic, the Greek Catholic, the Armenian Church, or the Roman Catholic. And they've all built cathedrals or churches over all these spots. And Israel doesn't have them. Israel doesn't dare touch those sacred spots. I said to a guy that I got acquainted with, and he's become a Jewish friend of mine. I said to him, why don't you go up there? You've got Jerusalem now. And tear down that mosque of Omar and put up a temple. He says, what do you want us to do? To start World War III? It'll sure start it, friends. Be no question about that. May I say to you, they don't have the temple area. They don't have a sacrifice today. The only place they've gotten to is the weeping wall. They're still at the weeping wall, friends. That's where they are today. And they do not have a sacrifice except the one that we have today. And that's when Jesus died. 1900 years ago outside the city. But he has been raised from the dead and he's at God's right hand. They do not have a sacrifice and without an image. Now, the idea here of an image is the fact that God didn't give them, very frankly, God never gave them any images, if you'll notice, no likeness at all. But he did give them many things, for instance, without an ephod or without teraphim. And teraphim are these little things that they carried around, little objects. And actually, they were little idols that they were carrying around, and they began to worship those things. Now, God says they're going to get away from idolatry. They won't have an image. And there's one thing you can say about Israel over there. They're not in idolatry. They've not turned to God, but they certainly have turned away from idolatry. Now he says here, afterward. Now, afterward doesn't mean 2000 A.D., I don't know when it is. "'Afterward shall the children of Israel return.'" Now, they are going to return. And when they return, this is the way they'll return to the land. "'And seek the Lord their God, and David their king, and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.'" Now, the latter days are yet in the future, because I think the latter days here refers to the nation Israel. And it refers, beginning with the great tribulation, goes through the second coming of Christ into the millennium. So that they have returned, but they have not turned to the Lord. Now, I'm going to say something to you that's very startling. Because my last trip over there, I learned more than any trip I ever took before. And this is one of the things that we can not only show you, but we can demonstrate it. Over there, there's no turning to God at all. Well, when they celebrated, for instance, some time ago, their anniversary, they had a big motto. I have a picture of it. It says that science will bring peace to this land. Well, I thought the Messiah was going to, but they're not turning to the Messiah. It's to science. Now they've added something to that, and that is prosperity. That is economics. And while we were over there, while they were having a great economic conference, one of the Rockefellers was there. One of the Fords was there. And a hundred outstanding men put up a million dollars each to invest in that land. And they said they just wanted a hundred. They could have had 500. And they're building over there like mad. You've never seen anything like it. Now, may I say this to you? Economics today is that. And there are two missionaries that I know over there that I consider very reputable. And these two missionaries have made this very clear. One of them, and he was asked the specific question, how many really Christians are there in this land today? Now, this man is an intelligent man. He speaks several languages. He's been a professor over there. And he's become a Christian and he's doing missionary work. And he made this statement. There are less than 300 Israelites that are real believers in Israel today. Now, that I know is going to cause a great deal of discussion and disagreement. For the very simple reason that there are some that are giving out propaganda today that hundreds are turning to Christ in that land. That just does not happen to be true. Now, there are actually more Arab Christians in Israel than there are Jewish Christians. That may also amaze you. And there are fine works among Arabs that are being carried on over there today. But missionary work in Israel is really a tough job. And there are very few missionaries over there to tell the truth. So that they have not returned to God today. And this prophecy... Right here, this verse 5 is an evidence of the fact that this present return to the land is not the fulfillment of the Word of God. Now, I know this is different than what you're hearing today. Have you ever heard any of these folk take the prophecy of Hosea or any of the prophets? And we take the whole book, friends, so we have to face up to it. They don't. They can always edge around these verses like this. And you can pull out a few verses that say, well, we've got this ridiculous thing going. And I mentioned it too. We heard some time ago that they were shipping Indiana stone over to Israel to build a temple. to that land, you know one thing that they don't need is stone. Jerusalem is on a rocky place, and every hill around it, including the Mount of Olives, are just loaded with rocks. Now, if Indiana wants to buy some stone, I can tell them where they can get it. Israel would be glad to export stone. Now, there's another prophecy that they talk about. They say, now, oranges are growing in that land, and that means that these are the strange slips that Isaiah said would grow in that land. Well, may I say to you, the orange tree in that land is not a strange slip. Actually, in the Song of Solomon, where it speaks of apples, the apple tree, it's the orange tree. Oranges grow in that land, and it's the belief now of some that oranges were taken from there to Spain and from Spain to Florida and to California. And today, that's the land that grows oranges and they're not a strange slip, my beloved. How ridiculous these things are becoming today. Friends, let's stay close to the Word of God. And if we do, we will not become one of these prophetic fanatics that are abroad in the land today. Now, I've spent a long time on this passage of Scripture. Five verses, and somebody says, my, but do you see how important it is? These last two verses are very important. Now we're not going to be talking anymore, or not very much at least, about Hosea's private personal life. We're moving now into the beginning here with verse 4 of chapter 3. We move into the prophetic section. And when we get here to chapter 4, where we're coming to right now, We are finding we're in the prophetic section, and he's going to talk a great deal about the faithless nation now that has been playing the harlot. Just as the church today, there are a lot of wonderful churches. Don't misunderstand me. Oh, they're wonderful, fundamental churches across this land. Thank God for them. But liberalism has taken over in so many places today, outstanding places, and the gospel is not given. And I say again, God says this nation has become a brothel and you're a bunch of prostitutes. What do you think Jesus would say today to his church? He'd walk in some of the churches today. I think he'd call them brothels. My friend, may I say to you that this is very strong language. And it's going to be too strong for some folk. They've already tuned me out. Now, chapter 4 and chapter 4 and 5, we have Israel plays the harlot. And here in chapter 4, we have Israel guilty. of lawlessness, immorality, ignorance of God's Word, and idolatry. Now, I believe that you could put that down today on this nation in which we live. These are the sins of the nation. Now, it's true that the nation Israel was God's chosen people, and he gave the law to them. But let's understand one thing, that his pattern for any nation that wants to be blessed by is along this same line. And therefore, we find here this nation guilty of the same things, or our nation, that the nation Israel was when God judged them and sent them into captivity. Now, somebody will disagree with me and say, well, we're not idolatrous. Well, covetousness is idolatry. And I do not know of a nation that is more greedy, more worshipping the almighty dollar, and believe me, it's not worth worshipping today, than this nation of ours. May I say to you, the judgment of God was upon this nation. But we might read this and point a finger at them and say it is a shame about how they turn from God. Look around you today and see if the same thing may not be true of us. Now, I can only read one verse. Just get a foot in the door, chapter 4. Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel. For the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth. nor mercy, nor knowledge of God. By swearing and lying and killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break out and blood toucheth blood. And my friend, God judges these things. We're going to look at these things next time. Until then, may God richly bless you, my beloved.

SPEAKER 02 :
All to him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, ride the Bible bus for five years and you'll be amazed at what God teaches you from his word about what it means to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. It's a blessing that keeps on going. That's what we believe at Through the Bible.
In this episode, we explore the intriguing story of Hosea, a prophet commanded to marry a harlot, and the enduring lessons his life teaches us about God's unwavering pursuit of His people. With commentary from Dr. McGee, we delve into the personal trials and divine promise within Hosea's narrative, relating it to the ancient Israelis' struggles and victories. We also touch on listener experiences and prayers, highlighting the universal theme of turning back to faith and finding solace in spiritual practices.
SPEAKER 03 :
The foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith.
SPEAKER 02 :
Welcome to Through the Bible. Early in this study, Dr. J. Vernon McGee shares with us about how to get victory in the spiritual life. He mentions how Joshua's army got the victory at Jericho because God led the charge. But the next battle was over the small city of Ai, and the army thought they could handle that one on their own without trusting God. But of course they were wrong. Dr. McGee says a great many people think they can live the Christian life in their own strength, which always means defeat. We're in Hosea 2, where God says, I'll take the name of Baal out of your vocabulary. And you know, he did. In fact, after 70 years as prisoners of war, the Jews finally broke their addiction to worshiping foreign gods. Where the word of God is not honored, worshiping other gods is a common thread. But spiritual victory is possible. And you know, the book of Hosea has some surprising lessons for us. But as we learn, the most painful lessons are in our relationships, aren't they? Specifically in our homes. And you know, many of our listeners have recently reached out asking for prayer in their heartbreak, and others are praising him at the same time for bringing them through. So as you find your seat on the Bible bus, I want to share a couple of letters. First, we're going to hear from a wife in Algeria who writes... My husband is an alcoholic, and most of the time I have no idea where he is. We go long periods of time without seeing him. He does not have a job and pushes us into more debt. I have a daughter to support, and there is no one I can talk to about this situation. Thank you for the program, which is my only friend. Next we hear from Mike. He's in the U.S. Like so many, I found TTB by accident on the radio, where I first heard a program that seemed to be spending time on a book not often covered in detail, 2 John. Then I heard Steve mention this was a five-year study of each book of the Bible, and I was hooked. I listened for many years until I fell away. A few years later, after about a depression and divorce, I began listening again. Praise God, the Bible bus was still there. Jesus, incredibly patient, yet powerful and loving. He stood by me, and I realized he's permanently in me and I in him. If he is for me, who can be effective against me? I love you, Jesus, and I praise you for using the many men and women who bring your word throughout the world for your glory. And thank you, Steve, Greg, and all my brothers and sisters all over the world. Well, Mike, thanks for that encouraging letter. Thanks for sharing your story too. Now, our last letter comes from Berenice in Brazil. I wanted to share with you what God has been talking to me about these past few days. I've been divorced for two years now. About a year ago, I started listening to your programs. I already knew you since my grandmother listened when I was a child. Through your teaching, God has been transforming my life, my way of thinking, and my character. I returned to the ways of the Lord and put my life in his hands. For a few weeks, I have been talking to my ex-husband again. I ask you to pray for us. I wrote this while crying and asking God to restore my marriage. Well, would you join us as we pray for the families of our fellow Bible bus passengers? And then also that we would praise God for the work that he's already doing in their lives. You can do that by signing up for our world prayer team in our app or online over at ttb.org. Let's pray together now. Father, thank you for the gift of studying your word together. We lift up those whose families are hurting and broken. You know the pain, Lord. You know the division. You know the struggles that they face. We would ask that you would bring healing, that you would mend what has been torn apart. Bring comfort to those who are hurting and reconciliation where there is strife and hope where there is despair. May your peace be with all those who need it today, Lord. In Jesus' name. Here's Dr. J. Vernon McGee with our study of Hosea 2 on Through the Bible.
SPEAKER 01 :
We are in this section of Hosea. That is the personal section. This is that section. That deals with the personal life, the home life of this man who was told to do a rather unusual thing, to say the least. And that is he was to marry a harlot. Apparently a girl, he'd fallen in love with her and she had gone bad. And so we find now that God asked him to go and marry her. And we'll see she'll become unfaithful again. And God again insists that he go and take her. Now, we have here, and I'm going to backtrack here to verse 15 of chapter 2. He says to this nation of Israel there to be restored. And as I said last time, and I probably will say it several times, you cannot read this prophecy. That is, take the whole prophecy and come to any other position than God is not through with the nation Israel. I don't care what your theology is, friends. The Word of God is the important thing. And you might be able to spiritualize this, but I don't think you can do that. Because when God speaks here, he's using a great deal of geography. And I think that when God says Israel and Ephraim, He's talking about a definite people, and He's not talking about you and me. But there are tremendous lessons here for us, not only as individuals, but I think for the nation, for that matter. And there was a time when this nation would hear the Word of God, but they've long since passed that stage. I'm reading verse 15 again, and God says, "...I will give her her vineyards there." and the valley of Achor were a door of hope. Now, you will recall when the children of Israel came into the land, there were actually three major enemies in the center of that land that had to be eliminated so Joshua could divide the enemy and then concentrate on one section at a time. The first was Jericho. Jericho represents the world. And then he made an attack upon Ai. That represents the flesh. He thought that was easy. And a great many people today think they can live the Christian life in their own strength by means of the flesh. And that always means defeat, by the way. And Joshua was defeated at Ai. But a great lesson was learned there. And God brought them down to the valley of Achor. And Achan was found there to be the one who had sinned at the destruction of Jericho. God told him not to touch any of the unclean things there. And those people were eaten up with venereal disease. And God had a reason for it. But this man disobeyed. And old Joshua, you remember, went down on his face and cried out to God. And he was as pious as I've been at times complaining to the Lord. Lord says, get up off your face. Israel hath sinned. You have to deal with sin before you can have a victory. And God says, now you deal with the sin. And they dealt with it in the valley of Achor. And from then on, it was victory for this man, Joshua. When you deal with the sins of the flesh, it'll mean victory. And therefore, he says here, and the valley of Achor, a door of hope. God says again, I'll judge your sin. And after I've judged your sin, there'll be a glorious, wonderful hope for you in the future. And she shall sing there as in the days of her youth and in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. So he's definitely referring to that period. And we'll read on now. It shall be at that day, saith the Lord, that thou shall call me Ishii, and shall call me no more Baali. And you have in that the word Baal, but it means Lord. You see, they were running around calling God Lord, Lord. And they were worshiping God at the same time, at least they thought they were. And they were worshiping Baal. You can't do both, by the way. And God says, though the day is coming that thou shall call me Ishi. And that is intimate. Oh, how intimate that is. That speaks of a husband. You will call me my husband. And that speaks of intimacy, speaks of love. Oh, it speaks of that which is on the highest plane that's imaginable. And even the name of Baal will be forgotten, you see. Now he says, verse 17, "...I'll take away the names of Balaam out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name." In other words, they'll turn from idolatry. Now, he says in verse 18, "...and in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, with the fowls of the heaven, with the creeping things of the ground, and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely." Now, even the animals in that land, as in our land today, There's a danger of many a species becoming extinct. Some already have. God says that the animals have a right to this world. He created them and put them here. And he says in that day, he's going to make a covenant with the beasts. And that's when the lion and the lamb are going to lie down together. Now, today they lie down together, but the lamb's always inside the lion. But in that day, they'll lie down together. That is something we think very little of today. And all of a sudden in this country, we've taken an interest in what is known as ecology. That is the land and the animals that are in the land. And have you ever noticed that all the way through the Word of God, that God is considering the animals and also he's considering the land itself, blessing to the land? Man, you know, is a polluter. He's a sinner on the inside and he's a sinner on the outside. And everything that man touches is nothing in the world but sin. And today they're trying to get us not to throw things along the highway around, not be a litter bug. And it's now a fine if you do that. And it's a good thing it is. I remember driving out from a hunt that a couple of friends of mine had several years ago out on the Mojave Desert. We were coming down the highway and the sun was going down and it was hitting the side of the road, and on both sides there was just a beam, a flash of light. I've never seen anything like it. You know what it was? Broken beer bottles and whiskey bottles and I guess a few bottles of soda pop. But man, he's a polluter everywhere he goes. God says, I'm going to also take care of this earth here. And thank God for that. I don't think men are going to be able to do it. Now, in verse 19, he goes on to say here, and I will betroth thee unto me forever. Yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness and in justice and in loving kindness and in mercies. And I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness, and thou shalt know the Lord. Now, we're coming to something that is very wonderful here. Actually, the word betroth here means to woo a virgin. It means to court a girl. Many of you men can remember your wife when she was a girl, how pretty she was and how you courted her. And by the way, you ought to remember it more often. He said a lot of sweet things then. The other evening, my wife and I were sitting out on the patio. I made this when I was recuperating from my physical trouble. And we were just talking about the fact that we are getting old. And I took a look at her and I have to say she is getting old like I am. But I can remember that girl that I first saw down in Texas with hair as black as a raven's wing, those flashing brown eyes. She had a sultry look, let me tell you, because she's dark complexion. And I remembered back there how wonderful those days were. And we got just a little sentimental, by the way, as we thought back over those days, how we used to drive up to Fort Worth and we went to a restaurant up there and We got a stake and you know what you paid for it in that day? 50 cents apiece. And she was a school teacher and I was a poor preacher. And I made her pay for her own, even 50 cents. I tell you, she's made up for that, those cents. And I can assure you, to woo a virgin. What a beautiful, lovely picture this in. God says that I intend to win you, but how is he going to do this? I'm going to woo you in righteousness and in justice. And in loving kindness and in mercies, you see there was mercy under the Mosaic system too. You will find that there was love in law and there's law in love also. You just can't absolutely segregate one from the other. This is lovely. And this again is one of the reasons. that I do not think the present return of Israel to that land is a fulfillment of prophecy. Certainly not this one. God says, when I woo you and bring you back into that land, why, it'll be in righteousness and in justice and in loving kindness and in mercies. Israel is just like any other nation. Some think they are a little more brutal, but my friend, they're on the defense over there, you can be sure of that. And they have to exercise a strong defense system. They are not backing that land. in fulfillment of prophecy. They have returned to the land, but they have not yet returned to the Lord. When they return to the Lord, there'll be blessing. They have not yet done that. I'm going to talk about that just in a few minutes, at least if I get there today. Verse 20 now, chapter 2, I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness. Now, they never were faithful in the past. They're very much like the church in apostasy today. And thou shall know the Lord, and they sure don't know him today. Verse 21, it shall come to pass in that day. Now, that expression, in that day, is an expression that I think is a technical expression, and it refers forward to the time of the last days as it pertains to the nation Israel. It refers to the great tribulation period and the coming of Christ to set up his kingdom down here. It shall come to pass in that day. I will hear, saith the Lord, I will hear the heavens, and they shall hear the earth. In other words, heaven and earth will be in tune, and Browning will be right in that day, and he's sure not right today that heaven and earth are in tune. Verse 22, And the earth shall hear the grain, and the wine, and the oil, and they shall hear Jezreel. Now, Jezreel meant God will scatter them. But in that day, God will regather them. Listen to him, verse 23. And I will sow her unto me in the earth, and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy. Not only will he regather them, but they will no longer be lo, Ruhamah, the unpitted daughter of Hosea and Gomer the harlot. But God will now have mercy upon them, and they will obtain mercy. And I will say unto them who were not my people, thou art my people, and they shall say, thou art my God. They are not saying that today, and today it's lo ami, not my people, but in that day it will be my people. God will say, you are my people, and they will say, You are my God. Now, that is not true today, friends. They are not turning to God, but they will turn to God in that day. All right, now we come down to chapter 3 here. In chapter 3, Hosea found out that his wife had proved unfaithful, but he's commanded to go and take Gomer again. Notice what he says. Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet. Love a woman, that is your wife, she's your woman, love a woman, beloved of her friend, you love her, though she's been unfaithful, yet she's an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods and love cakes of raisins. That is, they loved that which was part of the heathen worship of idols, the cakes of raisins. Actually, they were used in the sacrificial feast of the Canaanites of that day. And the children of Israel have adopted that. You can see God's making the application. He says to this man, Hosea, now you know how I feel. I want you to go and take Gomer again. She's been unfaithful to you, but you love her and you take her back. And God says, that's what I'm going to do with my people. Israel's been unfaithful to me, but I haven't cast her overboard. I'm going to punish her, but I have not gotten rid of them by any means. Now, will you notice what he says, verse 2? So I bought her for myself. Now, apparently she had sold herself. to some group of racketeers that were running brothels in that land, and he had to go buy her back. And I bought it for myself. And do you know that you and I have been redeemed? The picture's not very pretty. That's the reason it's not being preached more today. You can hear more today, even in fundamental circles, our conservative circles, about dedication, about commitment, and about the fact that you're to turn your life over to the Lord and you're to do this. My friend, the first thing you have to do is to come as a sinner to God He has to redeem you just as this man went and bought this harlot. That's the way God redeemed you and he redeemed me. And until you and I see that, we haven't seen anything at all. We haven't even gotten to first base until we see this. And he says, so I bought it for myself for 15 pieces of silver. and for a homer of barley and a half homer of barley. And she wasn't worth it. And you and I are not worth the redemption price because we were not redeemed with gold or silver or precious stones, but with a precious blood of Christ. He had to shed his blood. He had to suffer and die that you and I might be redeemed today. Why? Because we were lost sinners, sold under sin, if you please. We better learn to start there, friends. I heard a man, and he's a friend of mine. I heard him bring a message. I think he's a great preacher, but he's got soul. He doesn't mention the gospel. He didn't mention the fact that you have to come as a sinner. Oh, he told them, well, they ought to love Jesus. You ought to serve God. You ought to obey him and all that sort of thing. But friends, that's not where you begin. We are dead in trespasses and sins. And you just well go out the graveyard and say, listen, fellas and girls, Let's all of us start doing better. Let's all of us start committing our life to the Lord. We have no life to commit. Everybody out there is dead. They can't do anything. And you and I are dead in trespasses and sins until that matter is settled. And we are born again. We receive a new nature. We haven't got anywhere at all. Now, he says, "...and I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days." Thou shall not play the harlot. Thou shall not be for another man. So will I also be for thee. And a man told me a sad story not too long ago of how he found out that his wife was unfaithful to him and how he actually followed her. And he apparently had a detective. Imagine the feeling of that man. Oh, what a heartbreak it was to him to find out that she was unfaithful to him. Well, my friend, I can't think of anything worse than that. It broke up a home. It'll break up a home. But God says to his people, that's what you've been doing. You've been playing the harlot. You have gone after other gods and you've turned from me and you no longer serve me. Oh, you call me Lord. And the Lord Jesus said, many are going to say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, I'll say I didn't know you. Now, I'm going to say now probably the strongest thing that you've ever heard. And there's not one of these rock-ribbed fundamentalists even that criticizes me today. He's never said anything this strong. Did you know that in a church that has a building that has a steeple on it and a bell in it and a pulpit and a man stands up there who denies the Word of God denies the deity of Christ and denies that he died for sinners. And the people attend there and support that sort of thing. Do you know what you have? You don't have a church. You have a brothel, a spiritual brothel, my friend. And that's all in the world it is. And I didn't say that. God says that right here. This is the strongest language you can imagine. And you can understand why Hosea was not elected the man of the year. in Israel at that particular time. He didn't win the popularity contest in his hometown. You can be sure of that. Why? Because that's exactly what he's telling his people. You have become a brothel as a nation as you've turned to idolatry and turned from the living and true God. Now he said as a result, And I sure am going to have to save this until next time. I do want to talk about this. Verse 4 and 5. And I consider we've come to probably the most important verses right now for these students of prophecy today that are beginning to set dates. Listen to this. "'For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king,' without a prince, without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim. Now, will you notice, I'm going to talk about the many days next time, but they're going to abide many days without a king. Some claim in that land today they can tell you the tribe they belong to. I have my serious doubts about that, but at least they make the claims. But there is not an Israelite living today that can say, I'm in the line of David and I have a right to the throne of David. The only one that can claim that is right this moment, sitting at God's right hand. That's the Lord Jesus Christ, who's King of kings and Lord of lords. They're going to abide many days without a king. And they don't have one down here today. They've rejected their king and without a prince. That is, one to follow and without a sacrifice. Now, I'm going to have to say this until next time. Did you know that those there back in that land, had it ever struck you as being very strange that they actually do not have a temple and they do not have a sacrifice? Has that ever struck you as being unusual? Well, if it hasn't, then tune us in next time because we're going to talk about that, for that's very important. Until then, may God richly bless you, my beloved.
SPEAKER 02 :
You know, Dr. McGee pursues that question in our next study. So until then, if you want to dive deeper into your study of God's Word yourself or to be in touch, you can download our app. And I know that I say it all the time, but it really is an excellent way to stay on the Bible bus. I use it every day. Or visit us at ttb.org or call 1-800-65-BIBLE. I'm Steve Schwetz, and I'm looking forward to meeting you back here for another great adventure in God's Word next time.
SPEAKER 03 :
All to him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
SPEAKER 02 :
Through the Bible is a five-year study of God's entire word, and together we discover God's purposes in history and our lives, found only when we believe in Jesus Christ. Do you know him yet?
Join us on the Bible bus for an engaging study in the book of Hosea, where Dr. J. Vernon McGee explains the significance of spiritual fidelity amidst the worldly hustle. As the episode moves through personal stories and biblical prophecies, witness the transformative power of God's word and His vision for Israel's future. This journey not only enlightens but also challenges listeners to recognize the roots of true fulfillment beyond superficial idolatry and societal accolades. Expect encouragement and spiritual insight as you are reminded of God's enduring promise and love.
SPEAKER 01 :
The foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith.
SPEAKER 02 :
What would history look like if people turned to God to solve issues rather than going to war or instituting a national program designed to better mankind? Well, you know, the truth is those solutions really never work because our real problem is that we don't recognize God. And that's the lesson for every generation and what we'll learn in this study. We must recognize God. We need to listen to his voice and do what he says. Welcome to Through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee. I'm Steve Schwetz, and our study today is in Hosea 2, and it reminds us of God's warning to Israel through the prophet Hosea. Now, we're going to learn that even though Israel will be disciplined... God isn't through with them. God will call them my people once again. So grab your Bible, find your seat on the Bible bus, and while you do that, Greg and I have got some letters that we want to share from our fellow listeners.
SPEAKER 03 :
And this is one of our favorite things to do. And just before we jump into hearing from some of our listeners all over the world, I just want everybody to realize, by the grace of God, God's Word and the teaching of Dr. McGee is becoming available literally almost anywhere on Earth.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
And you can look at Google Maps or a globe in your house, and you can think... Yes, we live in an age full of real problems and challenges, but we also live in an age of unbelievable opportunity.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, and I don't want to wish my life away, but here we are in January of 2025, and frankly, I can't wait to see what's going to happen by the end of this year. Just the roadmap that we've got that we think we're going to be able to achieve with getting the Bible app into all these different languages. Yeah. And getting it out there, not necessarily because people are looking for through the Bible, but they're looking for the word of the word of God.
SPEAKER 03 :
And we want to be like Philip in the Ethiopian eunuch. We want to bring Dr. McGee's teaching to say, do you understand what you're reading?
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah. And it'll be there.
SPEAKER 03 :
And so here are some actual examples of what that looks like.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, here's a letter. This is from Marina, who listens in Russian from Siberia. Not long ago, though, I found your program and started listening. Thank you for showing a completely different image of Christianity. I didn't think there were any answers there for me. I thought it was like everything else. But your programs helped me understand why my life felt so meaningless. Because God wasn't in it. You helped me overcome my fear of people. And now I want to go to church and learn more about Christianity. Thank you for your program and for helping me understand myself and why I am here. Wow.
SPEAKER 03 :
And all the way from the winter wasteland of Siberia to a Turkana language listener in Kenya. This program has been a tremendous blessing to our community, bringing hope and support to many in need. I would also like to thank the team for their dedicated work, uplifting and empowering our community with God's word.
SPEAKER 02 :
So encouraging. And I love this last letter. We've got we've got time. Fortunately, this is from Landa. Get this. She's an Albanian woman living in Italy and she's watching slash listening to through the Bible in Albanian on YouTube. Wow. So this is cool. Here it is. Together with my family, we have immigrated to Italy. Life is difficult as immigrants, especially because you do not have your faith family close to you. A friend of mine told me that I could listen to TTB, that's through the Bible, on YouTube, and that's what I have done. It has brought me back to my early time of trusting God. At that time, I had a great desire to listen to TTB, but for a long time, I haven't listened to the programs, not since I moved to Italy. Now I have started to listen and to practice what I hear more in my daily life. God bless you.
SPEAKER 03 :
Fantastic. I think we have time to squeeze in one more great one. We love to hear from pastors. Here's a pastor in Orissa, India, who listens in the Sora language. I am a servant of God, a pastor, and I love reading the Bible. According to my understanding, God's word is like a deep sea. One can't learn it completely. When my family began listening to the radio kit, I realized there were many new insights. Today, my family and I are learning the deepest meaning of the Scripture, and I am able to share it with others. Thank you deeply.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, this is so great. You know, it says that this guy's a pastor, and we think pastor, therefore he went to seminary. And chances are, this guy did not go to seminary, and he is learning much about theology and God through the ministry of Through the Bible.
SPEAKER 03 :
And I think, Steve, we can safely say that tens of thousands of pastors around the world fit that description.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, yeah, so encouraging. Greg, let me pray for us. Heavenly Father, I pray for the ministry of Through the Bible around the world. I pray for this pastor in the Orissa area of India. I pray for all these listeners in Siberia, in Turkey, in Italy, that you would continue to open doors for them to hear the gospel if they are not saved and that they would be strengthened in their faith if they are, in part, through the ministry of Through the Bible. Bless your word as it goes out now. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Here's our study of Hosea 2 on Through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
SPEAKER 04 :
Now, last time, friends, we rather hurried over in Hosea. at the conclusion of chapter 1 and the first verse of chapter 2. Some very remarkable statements that we have here in verses 10 and 11 and chapter 1 and verse 1 and chapter 2. Actually, we have here five very wonderful prophecies concerning the nation Israel. It speaks to the fact that, first of all, there's going to be an increase in the population And on several occasions, they've been practically exterminated as a people on the face of the earth. But they continue as a nation and as a people. This is for the future and great blessing is promised for the future. Then he made it very clear to them here in the very place where we said, you're not my people. Well, you're going to be the sons of the living God. That means there is coming, and the Bible speaks of it, the conversion of a nation in the future. That doesn't mean every Israelite, but it does mean that the nation as such, there'll be a great turning to God. And not only that, the southern and northern kingdoms and all the 12 tribes are to be joined together in one nation. And that's one thing you discover over there today in Israel. There is not the hegemony and the harmony. that there should be. And as a result, it's a disturbance to the leaders over there. I take a Jewish journal, and the articles recently have dealt with that subject a great deal. But there's coming a day when they will be brought together, the 12 tribes together, And under one leader, by the way, which will be the Messiah, of course. And they're divided up over there today. As you know, in many parties, they are divided up like a railroad restaurant pie. And then you have here in verse 1 of chapter 2, say ye unto your brethren, on me and to your sisters, ruamah. And you remember that he said that you're not my people. Today's coming when he's going to say you are my people. He's not through with the nation Israel. And we're going to see that again when we get to chapter 3. And this is very important because my own private personal judgment is that this teaching that God is through with the nation Israel. It takes so much of the Old Testament and either spiritualizes it or discounts it. And if you can do that with the Old Testament and take any literal meaning out of it, just absolutely rape it as far as the meaning of it is concerned. Now, if you can do that with the Old Testament, You can do that with the New Testament. You can do that with the epistle to the Romans. You can do that with John 3, 16. But my friend, I don't think you can do it with the New Testament. I don't think you can do it at the Old Testament either. Now, let's read on here. He says, contend with your mother. Contend. The old word in the King James is plead. I don't know that this is too much of an improvement, but it does suggest that there is great contention because she went back to practicing prostitution and she was unfaithful to him. And it brings out that contend with your mother, contend for she's not my wife, neither am I her husband. Let her therefore put away her harlotry out of her sight and her adulteries from between her breasts. Lest I strip her naked and set her as in the day that she was born and make her like a wilderness and set her like a dry land and slay her with thirst. Now he's turning to the nation, applying it to the nation. But you must remember that this girl he married had become a harlot. And that's not the end of the story. After they were married and he had three children, she goes back practicing that again. And this man loved her, you see. Very frankly, the greatest sin, I think, in all the world, it's not murder, it's not lying, it's not stealing. And maybe under certain circumstances, the worst sin in the world is not adultery. But may I say this? The worst sin in the world is when a man and a woman love each other and one of them becomes unfaithful. That party is guilty of, I think, the worst sin you can break. You'd just as well be a murderer and a liar and your chances are... You'd do all of those if you do the other. And it drops you to my estimation, and I'm judging from what the scripture says, it's the worst sin you could commit. You've gone down to the very level, the lowest level that you can go to when you become unfaithful to one that loves you. Now, applying that over on the other side, what is the greatest sin in the world for a Christian to commit? I know that people have mentioned some of these sins I've mentioned. That is like murder, like lying, like coveting. Oh, there are many things that the saints have today as the greatest sin. But the greatest sin is to be unfaithful to God who loves you and redeems you. There's no sin greater than that. Now, here he says, go to your mother and contend with her. Tell her to come back home. Tell her to turn away from her idolatries. Now, God says, I intend to judge you. And this man Hosea, I think he said, I'll have her stoned if she continues this kind of a life. I intend to have her stoned. I'll have no other alternative. It's the reason I don't think he's quite as tenderhearted as Jeremiah. Now, will you notice, we move on here, verse 4. He says, and I will not have mercy upon her children, for they are the children of harlotry. They're illegitimate. Now, he's applying to the individuals in the nation. God is going to judge them. And this nation has gone into idolatry. And what does that mean? Well, that means the individuals have gone into idolatry. Actually, at this time, the entire nation apparently had turned to idolatry. And I'll not have mercy upon the children. They're the children of harlotry. For their mother hath played the harlot. She hath conceived them, hath done shamefully. For she said, I will go after my lovers that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my dream. Well, she's doing it for money. She says, I'm going after my lovers. There's money in prostitution. It's one of the big rackets that there is today. And by the way, I probably ought to add, it might be that Hosea was not a wealthy man, and he was not enabling her to live in the luxury she might have enjoyed before. And so she, on the side, practices harlotry. Now, what had happened to Israel was, Israel had turned to idols. That's spiritual adultery. When you turn from God as a professing Christian, you turn from him and you give yourself to the things of this world, then you're a harlot. Then you're practicing spiritual fornication and spiritual adultery. Now, what Israel was doing, they were giving the idols credit for providing for them. You see what he mentioned here? He says, I intend to judge you because you turn to your lovers and you say, well, they provide well for me. They've given me an apartment out here in the Wilshire district. Why should I go and live in the slums of Los Angeles when he'll take care of me like this? Israel was saying, well, these gods we worship now, Baal, why, they are providing for us necessities of life. Bread and water, that's necessity. And wool and flags, that's clothing. He bought me a silk dress. And Israel was saying, these gods provide for us. And then oil in my drink, that is liquor. And that is luxury. In other words, they were giving credit. to the idols. And God says all the time, I've been the one that's been taking care of you. Oh, today the ingratitude, not just to the human race, but especially of those that profess to be Christians today, their ingratitude to God for all that he provides for us. About people complaining today about conditions and everything. But you had a pretty good meal today, didn't you? You had clothing, didn't you? And I'm not sure, but what most of you have had some luxury. Who do you think provided those? Somebody says, well, I want you to know that I work and I'm an intelligent man or and I'm an intelligent woman and I have an executive position and I work hard for this. I'm the one that got all this. Oh, you think so? I have news for you. God provided that for you. He's the one that gave you health and strength. He's the one that gave you the job. He's the one that provides the sunshine and the water for you. And he's the one that's been good to you. And then you're going around ungrateful today. You can't sin much worse than that, my friend. We say, oh, these awful murders that are committed today. It's terrible. Oh, they're bad. But the worst sins are being committed by the children of God today that are ungrateful. Now, I know that's not popular. But friends, I've reached the place of my ministry, and I think it was characterized my entire ministry. I never sought popularity. I'm not seeking it today. I'm sorry that if you don't like what we're saying, we're going to say it because that's what this book says. That's what he's saying. Now, will you listen to him? Verse six, therefore, behold, I will hedge up the way with thorns and make a wall that she shall not find her paths. I think that God sent to us a depression and then we had the dust bowl. I think he was speaking to us in judgment. And if we had heard God at that time, we never would have had to fight World War II. We'd never had to go to Korea, and we never would have had to go to Vietnam. If we'd have sent enough missionaries over there, we wouldn't have had to send so many boys to die and to be put in prison camp. Back of our problem is the fact we're not recognizing God. Now, will you notice verse 7, and she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them, and she shall seek them, but shall not find them. Then shall she say, I shall go and return to my first husband, for then was it better with me than now. In other words, there comes a day when that girl that's become a harlot, she's not so pretty. She's not so beautiful. She's not quite so lovely. Therefore, she finds herself being put out. And that's exactly what was happening to the nation Israel. And they say, now we go back to God, but we're time service. Verse 8, for she did not know that I gave her grain and wine with oil and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal. Therefore will I return and take away my grain in its time and my wine in its season, and I will recover my wool and my flax given to cover her nakedness. God says, I'll judge you. And I think the story of our nation, especially during these difficult times, is a recognition of a nation that began back in World War I. Oh, how we have become sophisticated today. We now even say that homosexuals should be accepted in society. God says when that becomes prevalent in a nation, it means I've given up that nation. And then you hear of all the murders that are being committed today by this crowd, and then you're going to accept them into society. My friend, these are sinners. And this is a mark of a nation that's going down the tube when you begin to accept this sort of thing. We have today too many judges that know a great deal about the law, but they know nothing about how God overrules even the laws of a nation, especially when they make the wrong laws and wrong men sit in judgment. Let's move on down. I'm going to drop down to verse 10. Now will I uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers? None shall deliver out of mine hand. And I will cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts. And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me. And I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them. and I will judge her for the days of Balaam under which she burned incense, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers and forgot me, saith the Lord." The greatest sin in all the world, forget God. Now, will you notice what he says, verse 14, "...therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness." and speak tenderly unto her, and I will give her her vineyards there, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope." Now, it was in the valley of Achor, you will recall, that the children of Israel suffered a great defeat at Ai when they entered the land under Joshua. They had to ferret out that sin that was finally found in the household of Achan. And it had to be judged. And God says here, right where I judge your sin, I'm going to bless you. God says, I intend to restore you. He says, and I'll give you a door of hope. And she shall sing there as in the days of her youth and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt. My friend, even today in the land of Israel, you don't find it quite like this. Because this very land that he's talking about right here, even though Israel has the land, they don't have this land. You know who has it? Arabs cultivate this land. This is up near Shechem. This is up in the place where Joseph is buried, the tribe of Ephraim. It's in that area. And where God says the day is going to come, I'm going to bless you. But you don't see that there even today. You're not seeing the fulfillment of prophecy. And it shall be at that day, saith the Lord, that thou shall call me Ishai, and shall call me no more Baalai. Now, that is quite interesting here because it's all in the meaning. And I think this is quite lovely. And let's not miss it. Ishii means my husband. And that says the day is going to come when you're going to call me my husband. Now, let's look at that for just a moment. What does that speak of? That speaks of that which is intimate, that which is personal, that which is based on love, that which is the highest relationship among men when this woman can say, He's Ishii. He's my husband. And he can say, this is my wife. I think the loveliest things are said in the Bible. We saw it when we went to Song of Solomon. I am my beloved. He's mine. It was very crude that I heard on television some time ago. It was a couple of movie stars that were being interviewed. And she was a very beautiful woman, I must admit. And she was asked the question, aren't you afraid that you might lose him when he plays the leading man with some of these other beautiful actresses? She says, no, I give him all that I have. And there's nobody can give him more than I can give him. I am my beloved. My beloved is mine. And when you've got that relationship and a marriage, you've got a happy home. You won't have to tend these sessions, friends, where they tell you how to live like man and wife. The secret is love. And if you don't have that, you don't have anything. And if you've got love, you've got everything. You can work out your financial problems. You can work out personality difficulties. You can work out how to deal with the children if you love each other. And if you don't, you can't work out anything. And friends, it's wonderful when you have a relationship with God. And you can go to the Lord Jesus Christ and say to him, I love you. I belong to you. You belong to me. Remember Paul said, even to the Corinthians, he says, everything is ours. Paul is yours, and the world is yours, and Christ is yours. Have you made him yours, friend? Do you belong to him? Does he belong to you? And if he does, you've got something good going, I'll tell you that. There's no relationship quite like that today. You see, this book is a very wonderful book. It teaches us many things. And Ishi means my husband, but Baal means my Lord. That's all it means, my Lord. And it sounds like old Baal, does it not? Well, it's connected with Baal. You know, the Lord Jesus said there are going to be many in that day that are going to say, Lord, Lord, in thy name, we've done great things. We've done healing. We perform miracles. He's going to say, well, I don't even know you. May I say to you, the important thing, the all important thing is a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. And it's not to run around and mouth saying he's my Lord and I'm doing great things for him and I can do great things today. My friend. It just narrows itself down what he said to Simon Peter by the Sea of Galilee. Lovest thou me? Are you loving? And that was the problem with this nation here. They were far from God. Oh, they were calling him Lord. They said, yes, he's our Lord. But the day is coming when they're going to say, he's my husband. How personal that is. How intimate that is. And that's on the highest level. Until next time, may God richly bless you, my beloved.

You've heard me say it before, there's no pain quite like family pain.
SPEAKER 03 :
Nothing cuts deeper than the heartache that we feel when it involves those that we love the most. Well, in this Sunday sermon on Through the Bible, Dr. J. Vernon McGee addresses this tender topic, the tragedy of broken families and the path to healing. I'm your host, Steve Schwetz, and we're in the book of Hosea, which, as you may know, is a picture of God's love for a broken family. Now, typically, if what happened to Hosea happened in our own families, we'd just as soon bury it and push it aside or cover it up. But, you know, God brings our needs out into the open, doesn't he? He'd rather that we pull it out and face it and give him a chance to heal it. That's when the Lord does for us what we can't do for ourselves. And that's exactly what a listener named Vijaya in India shared with us. We were a happy family of four, he writes. I used to think there was no need to seek God when everything was going well. However, my perspective changed when I faced health issues. Unable to work, problems arose in my family life as financial difficulties strained our relationships. Later, my wife and children couldn't bear it anymore, and I found myself homeless. I contemplated taking my own life several times, though I could never go through with it. Now, at my sister's house, I don't know what my future holds, and I am weighed down by stress and loneliness. Recently I came across your program, and my perspective changed. The isolation I felt started to dissipate. I felt compelled to watch it more and learn about Jesus. I have now poured out my sorrows to Him in prayer, and now my mind is at peace. The suicidal thoughts have vanished completely. I believe God will transform the hearts of my family just as he transformed mine, and I pray for that. Wow, what a faith testimony. Isn't that an encouragement? Here's another one, also from India. My family had given up on me. I was drinking and gambling away all my earnings. The only time I spent at home was to argue with those I love. One day, my wife was listening to your program and I started to linger around the house just to listen. Before long, I stopped drinking and gambling. I stopped yelling. My family noticed and began talking to me again. God has performed a miracle in my heart and in my family. I have left behind my bad habits and my family has forgiven me. I'm so grateful that the Lord and my wife gave me a second chance. Well, amen. We can all be grateful for second chances, can't we? Let's pray. Father, we are your children. And just like your children, time and again, we run to you for protection and for love and provision and comfort. Thank you for every good gift you give us. Thank you for disciplining us and for the home that you prepare for us in your presence. Thank you for your tenderness in teaching us from your word. In your son Jesus' precious name, amen. Here's our Sunday sermon titled, The Greatest Sin in All the World on Through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
SPEAKER 01 :
The accusation is sometimes made that the present-day pulpit is weak and uncertain. Likewise it's charged that instead of being a voice in the wilderness today, the modern pulpit has settled down comfortably to become just a sounding board for the whims and wishes of a comfortable and indifferent people who have itching ears. If the charge is true, and it's likely that it is, then it's because the pulpit is reluctant to grapple with the great issues of life. This hesitancy, I think, is born of a desire to escape criticism. It's a dread of becoming offensive to the finer sensibilities. More often, I think it's a cowardly fear of are facing the raw realities of life and wrestle with this Leviathan of living issues today. The pulpit today quotes poetry and sprinkles rose water. It lives in a land of make-believe instead of saying to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved. The theater today, the movie, and All other agencies of communication, they deal with life stripped of all of its niceties. These instruments for reaching and teaching the masses take the gloves off, and they wade into the problems that we face daily. But not so the pulpit. The pulpit has avoided these issues. As we come this morning to the prophecy of Hosea, we cannot avoid dealing with the problems and issues of life. For there is a story that's back of the headlines in the prophecy of Hosea. It's not a pretty story. But we must understand it if we're to understand the message of Hosea. And that story which is back of the prophecy of Hosea is the tragedy of a broken home. You have in this book the personal experience of Hosea. And that is the background of his message. He walks out of a broken home. to speak to the nation from a heart that is breaking. He knew exactly how God felt because he felt the same way. Now, the home is the rock foundation of society and always has been of any people. God has given it to mankind regardless of who they are and where they are. He gave it at the very beginning. It's the most important unit in the social structure. It is to society what the atom is to this universe. We're told today that the little lowly atom is the building block of the universe. Well, the home today is the building block of society. And a building... is known by the bricks that go in it. The color of the building is determined by the individual bricks. The character of the building is determined by the character of the bricks that go into it. And no nation is any stronger today than the homes that make it up. For the home determines the color and complexion of society. It's the home today that reveals the strength of any nation or any people. The home is the chain of a nation that holds it together, and up and down this land of ours, down the streets and the boulevards, there are the links in this chain, and the chain runs on out into the highways and byways of life. And no chain is any stronger than the links that make it up. Those individual links are important. And so, my beloved, the home is the place that's the very bedrock foundation of any society. And it's the foundation, if you please, of the church. The home is where we live and move and have our being. It's in the home where we are ourselves. Oh, we dress up physically and psychologically when we go out. We put up quite a front sometimes when we go through our front door and move out upon the street. But it's within the walls of the home that we take off our masks and we are really ourselves. Because of the strategic position of the home, God has thrown about it certain safeguards to protect it. God has put around the home certain marks, certain tremendous safeguards, certain protection, certain bulwarks in order that he might protect that which is so important. Well, back of the home, God has moved and had a great deal to say about that which is the bulwark of the home, marriage. God has given more attention to the institution of marriage than he has to any other institution that's in this world. Society never made marriage. Society found marriage. God made marriage. He gave it to mankind. And marriage rests upon his direct word. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. God performed the first marriage ceremony. He gave the first bride away. He blessed the first couple. Marriage is more than just a legal contract. It's more than an economic arrangement. It's more than a union of just those with mutual love. It's an act of God, if you please. It rests upon his fire command. There are many young people today that think all that you need to get married is to get a license and a preacher, and then you've got it made. My beloved, if you're going to have a successful marriage, you have to have God. And God will have to make it. Otherwise, that marriage must go on the rocks. God has given a drive to the race to reproduce in the framework of marriage. And that's what makes the home. He said, the twain shall be one flesh, and before man walked out of the garden of Eden, God gave him this institution, and besides the skins that Adam and Eve had on, the only thing they had was a marriage certificate from God. That's all. That's the only institution that came out of the garden of Eden. Marriage is a sacred relationship. It's a holy union. Remember Paul said, he sinneth not, let them marry. The New Testament, I think, sums up the mind of God when it says, marriage is honorable in all. Therefore, my beloved, marriage cannot be broken by just some little legal act. It can't be broken by fit of temper. It can't be broken by self-will. I personally believe there are only two acts which break marriage. I mean real marriage now. The first act is death, of course. That automatically severs the relationship. The second is unfaithfulness. And that's unfaithfulness on the part either of the man or the woman. That rips the relationship in two. And the one that's guilty of adultery was in the Old Testament to be dealt with in one of the harshest manners that's imaginable. I wonder if you've ever noticed that. I want you to notice first Leviticus, the 20th chapter, the 10th verse and the importance that God placed upon it. And the man that committed adultery with another man's wife Even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer, and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. And then in Deuteronomy, the 22nd chapter, the 20th and 21st verses, Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die, because she hath wrought folly in Israel to play the whore in her father's house. So shalt thou put evil away from among you. Now, there are two words I think that we should say here by way of explanation and amplification. The first is that there are a lot of zealous Christians today that go over to Romans 7, 2. And they take that entirely out of context. Let me read it to you. For the woman which hath a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he liveth. But if the husband be dead, she's loosed from the law of her husband. And they come up and say, well, you see, as long as the husband lives, then there's never grounds for remarriage. You must put yourself back under law. And you must remember that under law, the unfaithful member of a marriage wasn't alive. He was out somewhere pushing up daisies through some rocks in a rock pile. You see, if that was enforced in Southern California today, we couldn't have freeways because there wouldn't be room for them. You couldn't get around the rock piles. in Southern California. You see, the guilty party in the Old Testament was stoned to death, so there was no living one left. But today we don't do that. And so there's a different arrangement today. I'm not sure what Paul, under unfaithfulness in 1 Corinthians 7, between a believer and unbeliever, makes unfaithfulness one that walks out upon the believer. Then will you notice that there's something else that needs a little amplification here? We judge from the passage I read in Deuteronomy. It says, if the damsel is guilty and she and so on, and someone says, why in the world is the woman picked on? Isn't the man guilty? Yes, my beloved, but there are two things that you need to bear in mind. One is, that the word use is always the generic term. It's anthropos in the Greek, which means man is mankind, and it does not have respect to sex, but means either man or woman. We have that same thing in legal terminology today. I've noticed some contracts where it says if the party of the first part, if he does something, if he promises, if he agrees, well, sometimes he is she, but before the law, she is he. And that's the way the law looks at it. So that's the way the term is used here. It means either one. And then you must remember that these are pictures in the Old Testament of Christ and the church, and he's never guilty, but the church is. And so when you carry that figure over, I think that you can understand and see that. Well, may I say to you, that does not mean... that there isn't a difference. I do not think that Scripture teaches a double standard, but I do think it teaches a different standard. And if you don't believe that today we have that, you go to the department store. You can't buy men's clothes in the women's department. They make a distinction. Anywhere you turn today in life, there's that distinction made. And the Scripture makes that distinction. I personally think a woman is finer than a man. I think God made her finer than a man. I take my watch to one repairman. I take my car to another because they're different. A woman's different than a man. She's made finer than a man. I've seen children, and you have, overcome the handicap of a ne'er-do-well father. but I've never yet seen children overcome the handicap of a bad mother. Mother's the center of the home. I heard some time ago of a woman who was asked to take an office in a church. She refused to do it, and she gave us a reason. She says, I'm a missionary to the nursery, and there are three pairs of eyes that are watching me, and I want to direct them to God. May I say to you that God's put woman in the home, made her all important in that place. I think that I can make this clear by quoting to you the definition of what is a girl by Alan Beck. I think this is one of the loveliest things that's ever been composed. Will you listen to this? Little girls are the nicest things that happen to people. They are born with a little bit of angel shine about them, and though it wears thin sometimes, there's always enough left to lasso your heart, even when they're sitting in the mud or crying temperamental tears or prating up the street in mother's best clothes. A little girl can be sweeter and badder oftener than anyone else in the world. She can jitter around and stomp and make funny noises and frazzle your nerves. Yet just when you open your mouth, she stands there demure with that special look in her eyes. A girl is innocence playing in the mud, beauty standing on its head, and motherhood dragging a doll by the foot. God borrows from many creatures to make a little girl. He uses the song of a bird, the squeal of a pig, the stubbornness of a mule, the antics of a monkey, the spryness of a grasshopper, the curiosity of a cat, the slyness of a fox, the softness of a kitten. And to top it off, he adds the mysterious mind of a woman. A little girl likes new shoes, party dresses, small animals, dolls, make-believe, ice cream, makeup, going visiting, tea parties, and one boy. She doesn't care so much for visitors, boys in general, large dogs, hand-me-downs, straight chairs, vegetables, snowsuits, or staying in a front yard. She's loudest when you're thinking, prettiest when she's provoked you, busiest at bedtime, quietest when you want to show her off, and most flirtatious when she absolutely must not get the best of you again. She can muss up your home, your hair, your dignity, spend your money, your time, and your temper. Then just when your patience is ready to crack, her sunshine peeks through and you're lost again. Yes, she's a nerve-wracking nuisance, just a noisy bundle of mischief. But when your dreams tumble down and the world is a mess, when it seems you're pretty much of a fool after all, she can make you a king when she climbs on your knee and whispers, I love you best of all. My beloved, the prophecy of Hosea is the story of a broken home. It's a story of that which must be contrasted with God's ideal of marriage and of womanhood. That's its message. May I say to you that this is the way God tells his story. Now we're prepared to look at the story that's here in Hosea. In the hill country of Ephraim, in one of the many little towns there, a little town that's not on the maps of this world, there lived two young people. One was a boy by the name of Hosea. The other was a girl by the name of Gomer. They fell in love. Same old story. It's been repeated thousands and thousands and millions of times. I don't think it's stretching the imagination to say that they fell madly in love with each other. And then for some unaccountable reason, Goma went bad. She resorted even to the oldest profession that's known to mankind. Goma... had done the things she should not have done, and Hosea was brokenhearted. Shame filled his soul, and he had recourse to the Mosaic law, and he could have taken her before the elders of the city and had her stoned to death. Does that remind you of another story that took place 700 years later in that same hill country when a man by the name of Joseph was engaged to a girl by the name of Mary? The only thing is Joseph was wrong and the angel had to appear to him. This man Hosea was right for Gomer was guilty. And it's at this particular juncture that the book of Hosea opens. Will you listen now to the second verse of the first chapter, the beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. And the Lord said to Hosea, Go take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms, for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the Lord. Now, there have been those today that have made the statement that what you have here is nothing in the world but an allegory, that this really never happened. May I say that such trifling as that with the Word of God waters it down till it becomes a harmless sort of thing and meaningless, and it's sickening. May I say to you that this is something that actually happened. Let's face it. God commanded this man, Hosea, to break the Mosaic law and go marry this woman. He said, you go get her and marry. The law said stone her, God said marry her. The thing God commanded this man, Hosea, to do must have caused him to revolt in every fiber of his being. But this man Hosea did not demur. He obeyed God wholly and completely and explicitly, and he went and took Gomer in holy wedlock. He gave her his name, and she came into his home and listened to the apostle Paul as he speaks of this. What? Know ye not that he which is joined to a harlot is one body? For to Seth he shall be one flesh. And my friend, in that little town, The tempo of gossip was really picked up. Oh, I tell you, that home of Hosea became a desert island in a sea of criticism. It was an isolation ward. of local society. A case of leprosy in the home would not have broken off contact any more effectively than this thing that had happened. Imagine this man marrying this woman. Children were born into the home. Three of them were born. Let me tell you there's meaning here. Jezreel was the name of the first one. It means God will scatter and God will avenge. The reference, as God told Hosea, was directly to the house of Jehu, who had carried out God's instructions in destroying the house of Ahab, but he'd done it in hatred, and he'd done it with great personal vengeance. And God says, I'll judge. But then he says, I will scatter Israel, but there's going to be mercy even in my judgment. That's the first child. The second child was named, she was a girl, Lo-Ruhamah, and it means she never knew a father's pity. Now, that doesn't mean she was an orphan. It means she didn't know who her father was. This woman has started to go bad again. God is saying to these people in Hosea's day, the northern kingdom that now has gone into idolatry, you will not know my pity for I'm not your father. And that brings us to the last child. What a story is here. Lo, Ami was the name of the last boy. It means not my people. If you want to put it in the singular, it's not my child. Hosea said, I didn't know about the second one, but I do know about the third one. I'm not the father, not my child. What a message. What a message to that day and what a message to this day. The liberal today says, everybody's the son of God. God says, you're wrong. I have no illegitimate children. I know who my children are. You think my children are the offspring Of this kind of a union? Absolutely not. You are only my child through faith in Jesus Christ. And it was the Lord Jesus that said to these in his day, who said, we are sons of Abraham. He said, you are of your father, the devil. You could make no claim of being God's child. My friend this morning, are you low on me? Are you God's child today? Are you just an illegitimate child? You're just saying something that's not true. You become a child of God. To as many as received him, that is the Lord Jesus, to them gave he the right, the authority to become the sons of God, even to those that don't do any more nor less than believe on his name. This is a sad story, is it not? And to cap it all, Gomer left home. She ran away. Now I'm confident that you're willing to say, well, certainly God's going to say to this man now, you've done all you can, Hosea. You tried to reform the woman, and it didn't do any good. She's returned back to her old life of becoming a common prostitute. Take the children and leave her. God says, go get her. Hosea went after her, and she wouldn't come back. God says, send the children. And these three children went after her, and she still wouldn't come back. And as women did in that day, they sold themselves into slavery. And this man, Hosea, went and bought her and brought her back. Oh, my beloved, what a picture of a Savior today. He created us, and we belong to him. And then we're guilty of going off and giving our love and our affection, our time to the sin of the world. And in the midst of that, when we were yet sinners, he came down and bought us with a price in our ugly condition that he might make us his legitimate children. What love. And so it was at this particular juncture when she came back, that the message goes out from Hosea. I wish this morning I could say that when she came back that she became a faithful wife. I can't. I do not know. The book leaves us in doubt. But I do know this. This man stepped out of a home scarred by shame. This man went before a nation with a heart that was breaking. This man had a message that had fire in it. He stood before this nation with a broken heart, and he had a sorrow that was intolerable. Scalding tears were coursing down his cheek, and he denounced the nation Israel, and he says, you have been faithless to God. I know how God feels. I feel the same way. You've broken the heart of God. What a picture. He denounced the nation. He declared a verdict of guilty for the crime of all crimes. He said simply, but he said it specifically, that this sin was as black as it could be and that God would punish. He said this nation that had known God, this nation that God had redeemed out of Egypt, This nation that he could say, you have seen what I did to the Egyptians. How I bore you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself. And they turned right around and make a golden calf. And they hadn't learned their lesson after that experience. For at this very moment in the northern kingdom, two golden calves had been made. And the people had turned from the living and true God. God says, you've been unfaithful. You are playing the harlot. You turn from me. You belong to me. I have redeemed you. And you've sinned. This sin is the worst sin in the world. Oh, I know that there are folks that will say this morning, I think unbelief is the greatest sin ever. May I say to you that in one sense, unbelief is the greatest sin. If there's any sin unpardonable, it's unbelief. But it's not an act. It's a state, and we're all born in it. Rebellion against God, we're in that. But thank God it's pardonable. Christ died that when you and I will exercise faith, faith in Jesus Christ, then he'll save us. And this sin is pardonable. But unbelief is a terrible thing, and to go on in unbelief, there is no remedy, for it is. The remedy is to trust Christ. And when we continue on in unbelief, we've rejected the remedy. Then there are those that will tell you today that the greatest sin in the world is sin against light. Well, this is coming close to it. I'll be perfectly frank with you. I do not think today that there's anything quite so bad as sinning against light. I make this statement periodically. Let me repeat it. I would 10,000 times rather be in the darkest part of Africa this morning than to be sitting in the church and turn my back on Jesus Christ. No one can argue from the word of God what will happen to the man who sins against light. That's a great sin to have heard the gospel, and it's not a personal. We'll be able to go out of here this morning and go into the presence of Jesus Christ and say you never heard that he died for you and that you're to trust him to be saved. You'll never be able to. There are people that are able to go into his presence and say that, but that's not the greatest sin. What is the greatest sin in all the world? The greatest sin in all the world is sin against love. This is sin that's worse. You can't get any worse than this. This is the greatest of all. And that, my friend, is the message of Hosea. Goma was not only guilty of breaking the marriage vow, that's bad enough, but she sinned against the one who loved her. It's sin at its worst. May I say to you today, to sin against God today and a Savior that loves you is worse than the animism and the animalism of the heathen world today. May I say to you, the sin today of paganism is nothing compared to the sin of those that sin against love. It's deeper and it's darker than the immorality of the underworld and the demonism of the overworld. Hosea knew what sin was and he knew what love was. And sin against love aggravates sin. Israel knew the love of God as no nation did. You alone, God said, if I known of the nations of the world, you alone if I reveal this, you've sinned. But thank God, he's going to triumph. May I just lift out in closing three verses out of Hosea that tell God's story. The first is, Hosea 4, 17, Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone. Ephraim is Israel. That's the charge, spiritual adultery. Then notice, though, all the great pulsating passion of an infinite God. How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? How shall I deliver thee, Israel? God says, I can't give you up. I love you too much. And that's the reason he sent Hosea back to get that woman the second and the third time. He said, Hosea, you'll have to know how I feel. Go at Israel. And then the third and the last is Hosea 14, 8. Ephraim shall say, what have I do anymore with idols? I've heard him and observed him. I'm like a green fir tree. For me is thy fruit found. That's the victory. God's going to get the victory, my beloved. There is a day when Israel will turn from idols back to God. And that's my reason for believing that maybe Goma did turn and become a good wife and a good mother. I do not know. But I do know this, God is going to triumph. And the picture is the picture of the nation Israel. Somebody says, but does it have any application to us today? Yes. Does this shocking description of spiritually adultery, does it fit the church today? Well, the church is called the bride of Christ. Paul said to the Corinthians, I have a spouse. that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. The church is to be presented to the Lord Jesus Christ as a bride. Listen. Even to the church in Ephesus, the Lord Jesus Christ says, I have something against you. Now he says, I know your works and I know your labor. And I know that you can't bear those with false doctrines. But I have this against you. You have left your first love. My friend, it's not enough this morning to be busy for Christ. It's not enough to be active today for Christ. And it's not enough to be just fundamental. Those things are important and they have their place. But the important thing is, have you left your first love? Do you love him today? Hosea means salvation. It's the same word as Joshua, and Joshua is the same word as Jesus in the New Testament. Our Hosea today is joined to a spiritual harlot. Picture that is given in Revelation 17. It's the most frightful picture in the Bible. It's a picture of a church called the Great Harlot, Mystery Bible. That's the way the organized church is going today. Oh, how many this morning are covering up their frustration, their lack of spiritual experience today, the reality by just being busy. It's merely a Nothing in the world but just nervous agitation. Down underneath they cannot say, I love him, I'm true to him. With hot tears today he accuses the church of being lukewarm. God pity the man married to a lukewarm woman. God pity our savior today joined to a church that's just lukewarm. All that he said, I wish you were hotter cold. I wish you were in love with me. I wish you did care for me above everything. That's what he said. Let me be very personal this morning. How about you? Has there come between the Savior this morning and your soul a cloud? It'll shut you away from him, I'll tell you that. Spurgeon was crossing the street one day, and he stopped and had prayer, and when he got to the other side, a friend said to him, what in the world did you do praying in the middle of the street? He said, a cloud came between my soul and Christ, and I couldn't let it stay there even until I got to the other side of the street. How about you today? He says this morning, as he said yonder by the sea of Galilee, lovest thou me. That's all important. May I say that it's so important today that he is saying here in his love, not that we love God, but that he loved us and sent his son to be the propitiation, the mercy seat, for our sins. And if you were here this morning without Christ, don't take any comfort from this message because you can walk out of here turning your back on a Savior that just simply said, God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. When you reject Jesus Christ today, you're not just doing something that's bad. You're not just turning away in unbelief. My friend, you're committing the greatest sin of all. You're turning away from a God who loves you and died for you. There's no sin like that.
SPEAKER 03 :
Let me repeat what Dr. McGee said, because it's so important. The greatest sin is turning away from a God who loves you and died for you. If you listened to this whole message, or maybe you jumped in at the end, regardless, you've heard about our loving God who reaches out to you right now. His word says it best. In 1 John 4, 10, we find, "'In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.'" And then John 3.16 says, For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. I never tire of those verses, and I imagine you don't either. They're the foundation stones of our lives. SPEAKER 01 :
If there was a man in your church who had the qualifications of a deacon but was divorced, could he still be a deacon? What if he was divorced and remarried? Well, stay with us to find out what the Bible has to say about this issue. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God. This is Steve Schwetz, and I welcome you to another edition of the Question and Answer program with our Bible teacher, Dr. J. Vernon McGee. I hope that you'll be able to pull up a chair as we listen to his answers to the questions of his many listeners. This program is a ministry of the Through the Bible Radio Network. Our first question comes to us from a listener in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He writes, Does it really matter if a person is a Roman Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, or Presbyterian as long as they believe that Jesus is the Christ, born of a virgin, died, rose from the dead, and is now sitting at the right hand of God the Father as our Savior?
SPEAKER 02 :
Well, may I say to you that when you mention some of these here, Very frankly, today, even some of the denominations would not accept all of this. So the label that is on you really hasn't anything in the world to do with it. You will not be in heaven as a Methodist or a Baptist or a Catholic or a Church of Christ or what have you, or an independent. You'll be there because you've trusted Christ as your Savior. And that's the important thing. Labels are of no value. That's like an old preacher, a young couple came to him and said, we're moving our membership to another church. They have a lot of activity there. They have a basketball team and they have a volleyball team and they have banquets and we want to go there. So we'd like to have our membership move. And he thought for a moment and he said, well, I don't think it will hurt to change a label on an empty bottle. The label that's on you, friends, doesn't amount to a row of pins. Doesn't matter whether you're saved or not. The important thing is, have you trusted Christ as your Savior? Now, when you've done that, I believe you'll seek out a church that believes as you believe. And I think it's important to be in a church that believes as you believe. And I'm sure you can find one. So that the label is certainly not the important thing at all.
SPEAKER 01 :
Now here's a question from a listener in Wisconsin. It says, In view of the many passages in Scripture that speak against judging others, does a church or a pastor have the right to judge who will go to heaven and who will go to hell? It seems to me that we should leave the issue for God to judge. What do you think?
SPEAKER 02 :
Well, I'm not quite clear really what you're asking for because I think it's quite obvious that All of us have opinions. Maybe you wouldn't want to call it judging, or maybe you would call it judging. Those that are around us that we know, I hear it constantly. I hear a statement like this, oh, so-and-so is a real, genuine Christian. And I hear somebody else say, well, there's some question about that party. I don't think he shows any evidence of being a born-again Christian. Well, that is something that I think most of us are doing constantly. We do pass judgment on our friends, and we are concerned about those that we are not sure about, so that the way that you've asked the question, if you mean that there are some people who are a minister, you say a church or a minister makes a decision, I never heard of that before, but if they've got a list of those that are going to heaven and a list that are going to hell, well, that, to my judgment, is carrying it a little too far. To begin with, I don't think we know. Then if we think we do know, we have no right to make a judgment. And certainly a person is in the hands of God and not in our hands. And that's a true, especially those that have lived their lives. Now, I have heard people say concerning someone that is dead, pass a judgment on them. Well, after they're dead, it's for sure they passed out of our hands and we no longer can pass judgment on them because it's no longer in our purview at all. So that I'm not quite clear what you're getting at here. If there are churches and ministers that are making up lists, two different lists, I would say that's definitely wrong. But if we're in our everyday life where we live and meeting people, going in and out among the children of man, why, we form an opinion, but I don't think we're sitting in or attempting to come to any final decision. We just wonder in our own minds and express an opinion, and I don't think the average person I hear that speaks like that They're not attempting to form a judgment in the sense that what they say is QED, that it is final, and that that's the way that it's got to be. If they are, of course, they're sitting in the place of God.
SPEAKER 01 :
We come now to a question from a listener in Venice, Florida. It says, in Revelation 10 verse 11, John is told that he will prophesy again. I looked up the word prophecy and it means speaking. Would you please explain how John is going to preach or speak again to kings and nations when he's on the island of Patmos? Am I correct to assume that one of the witnesses in Revelation 11 could be John, since God told him he will preach to many nations?
SPEAKER 02 :
Well, I see what you're getting at, but And this, as far as I'm concerned, I knew. I never heard anyone suggest that one of the witnesses might be John. And I personally think that is entirely out of the question here. It's true John was on the Isle of Patmos, but he will speak through the word of God to kings and nations. And he certainly has done that in his gospels. in the epistles and in the book of Revelation. Now, you want the corollary to that. In Hebrews 11, 3, it says concerning Abel, "...he being dead, yet speaketh." So that in the time of the writer of Hebrews, here Abel was speaking. But how was he speaking? He was speaking in the Old Testament. And he speaks today. How does he speak in the Old Testament? How does John speak today in the New Testament? The record is quite clear, the books that he wrote. And so he speaks today. That's not out of line at all.
SPEAKER 01 :
Our next question comes to us from a listener in McBain, Maryland. She writes, Revelation 6 verses 9 through 11 mention the souls of the slain saints who were under the altar. Will these saints be at the marriage supper of the Lamb with the church? Could you also explain when the marriage supper takes place?
SPEAKER 02 :
Well, they're going to be there, but not just like the church. The church is not a guest. The church is the bride at the marriage supper. Now, it is now the position of many of us that the marriage of the Lamb that John mentions in Revelation, the last part of Revelation, that that takes place in heaven. but that the marriage supper takes place down on this earth where many guests are invited. There will be not only the tribulation saints, but there will be the Old Testament saints. And we see that given to us in the 25th of Matthew, the first parable that's given of the five wives and five foolish. And these five wives were waiting for the coming of the bridegroom and the bride, that is, for the Lord Jesus and the church to come to the earth. And then there's to be the marriage supper. And we're told that five of these are are going to be present at the marriage supper. I'm sure the tribulation saints will be there. John the Baptist said he would be there. He says, he that hath the Bride is the bridegroom, but John said he was just a friend of the bridegroom, and he was going to be there and rejoice. So we have that understanding of what is meant there. And then you ask, when does the marriage supper take place? Well, I think that during the great tribulation period, there's great rejoicing in heaven with a church that has just come up. The marriage has taken place, rewards have been given, and now they come to the earth when Christ comes to establish his kingdom here upon the earth. Then the marriage supper takes place, and I would say that it takes place at the end of the great tribulation period and at the beginning of the millennial kingdom here upon this earth. That is the belief now of a great many of us. We, I think, are pretty much in agreement relative to these details, but we could miss some of the details, that's for sure.
SPEAKER 01 :
Here's a question from a listener in Fresno, California, who writes, Do you believe that a person should be allowed to die who is believed to have little or no hope of recovery? I'm thinking of an elderly man who was considered to be in a vegetative state.
SPEAKER 02 :
I believe that when a person becomes a living vegetable, that the relatives ought to be ready and willing to make a statement whether they would want him maintained in life. And it's all done by an artificial means, you see, at that stage. And I would say that it would be just the withdrawal of medicines that are keeping them alive in that state. And those medicines are artificial, they're not a cure, and they maintain that. There are others that are plugged into a machine. I would not want to live as a vegetable at all. I would not consider that a kindness on the part of my loved ones to just maintain life like that because that's not living at all. And I think that when a person comes to that state, then the relatives ought to make a decision. And then if a person in his right mind has reached a place where he's incurable and cannot recover, but a machine is keeping him alive. I think he's the one to make the decision of whether he's to go on with that, recognizing that there'll be no cure at all. I think that would have to be a decision for him to make. I don't think that's a decision for doctors to make. I don't think it's a decision for nurses to make or hospitals to make or for a judge to make. I think that it has to be entirely in the hands The individual, if they're able to make it, and if they become a vegetable, it'd have to be the relatives make the decision.
SPEAKER 01 :
Here's a question from a listener in Louisville, Kentucky, who asks, I have a complaint about some of the other radio and television ministries. It seems to me that as soon as they get your name on their mailing list, they shower you with requests for money to maintain their broadcasting. Now, I don't have this difficulty with Through the Bible, so I'm asking for your thoughts on my complaints.
SPEAKER 02 :
I thoroughly agree with you on that. I find that I'm on the mailing list of certain Christian organizations. I never ask to be on the list. No one asks that my name be put on. They just got my name from some mailing list that they bought or they exchanged theirs for someone else. I understand a great deal of that is being done today and that I get literature about work I know practically nothing about them. Some of them I know absolutely nothing about. I feel like it's a waste of money to send me the literature. I get some colored magazines that are very expensive. I know that because we've investigated whether we should issue a magazine, but we never sent it to anybody that didn't request it. But we decided not to go that route because of the fabulous expense that you incur in publishing literature like that. So we've steered away from it when I've been out of town for a week or maybe sometimes a month. And I come back, my secretary has it in a box. And I take it home and I sit down with a wastebasket and I dump it. I have sometimes gone through that second-class mail, junk mail, and put every last piece of it in the wastebasket. And what a waste of money it is. I estimated the other day that the literature I had would cost you around $50 just to publish it today. That is, publish an amount of it and me get just one piece of it. Why, how very expensive that is. And I consider that today a waste of the Lord's money, and it's an evidence that promotion is being used and trying to reach people that apparently are givers because they've given to some program and they get your name from that program. I know that one organization, and I support that organization, I believe in it. It's a missionary organization. I've been to their field. I know what they're doing. But they've made the mistake of trading their mailing list with another organization. I think it's entirely wrong. And I found myself on the mailing list of this other organization that I know nothing about. And I don't want to know anything about it because I've got all I can handle. And I'm sure that's a condition of most of you folks. So I must say it's, to me, junk mail. Now, we've attempted to avoid that by, you have to get on our mailing list because we just don't mail out just to be mailing out things. And we protect our mailing list. You can't get our mailing list. So we attempt to maintain that policy, and we've followed it down through the years. Now, this party says that they support their church. Well, that ought to come number one for you. And if you're in the kind of a church you can't support because they are not doing a work for God today, or they don't believe the Word of God, then you ought to get in a church that you can support, because you ought to support your church. Now, this party goes on to say that they give just a certain limited amount. to their work and also they give a limited amount to a certain radio programs in the view of the fact they didn't send any in this letter, I'm sure they don't support us, which is perfectly all right. Then the question this party has, do you think I'm too critical? No, I don't think you are. I thoroughly agree with you and that's what I've been trying to say. Do you agree with their methods? No, I absolutely do not. If I did, we'd be practicing them, and we do not practice them at all.
SPEAKER 01 :
Let me take a moment and recap for you the mailing list policy for Through the Bible. No person is added to our mailing list unless they personally request to receive our mailings, and no person on our mailing list will receive requests for financial support. Finally, our mailing list is for our use only, so information is never sold or given away to any other person or organization. Now, let's move on to our next question. It comes to us from a listener in Roanoke, Virginia, and they write, Would you allow an innocent party in a divorce to serve as a deacon or deaconess?
SPEAKER 02 :
May I say to you that a great deal would be determined by the rules and the policy of the church. Now, if you're asking me what I would do, I would say that if the innocent party in a divorce, I would allow him to serve as a deacon and her to serve as a deaconess. I would not use that because if before they were saved, they got married and got divorced, why, God has forgiven them if they are now a believer. And if they'd committed murder, I wouldn't keep a murder from becoming a leader in the church. Now, the other side of the coin is this. Certain churches have certain policies. And I would not go against the policy of the church. If you're in a church and the policy of the church is under no circumstances to let a divorced person serve as deacon, I would not make an issue of it because there's no reason to try to cause turmoil. That is on a certain person. It would be embarrassing for that individual, probably end up by that individual having to leave the church. Now, I had that happen in the church that I served. It was the policy. And I tried to change the policy while we were considering this individual. I wished that we would have gotten by that situation and then brought it up while tempers were down. people could think normally and see what the Word of God really had to say, but I didn't do that, and so as a result, why this party did have to leave the church, or didn't have to, but they felt embarrassed by it that they'd been turned down. Now this party asks, says, could you give scripture references to back up your opinion? Let me turn your question around, and can you give any scripture that would contradict what I've said. That's the important thing. I don't think that you've got a verse in Scripture that says the innocent party in a divorce can serve as a deacon or cannot serve as a deacon. And so apparently this viewpoint has come down through the years because there was a time when divorce was not permitted on any grounds whatsoever, you know. So I think that today we have a better understanding of the Scripture at this particular juncture that when it was all based at one time, man should be a husband of one wife. Well, a great many have used that. Well, the situation under which Paul gave that was that several men had several wives. One man may have two or three of them, you see, and the others would have maybe even more. And Paul is saying that a deacon should not have but one wife. So I think that that scripture has been pretty well straightened out. And then Paul speaks of the innocent one in a divorce in the seventh chapter of 1 Corinthians. And I think it's very clear. that if the unbeliever does not want to stay with the believer, they can go and the believer is not bound at all. So if the innocent party in a divorce, and I would say that would be the scripture that would cover it. Now, I do not think there's any scripture that contradicts that.
SPEAKER 01 :
A second query from the same listener brings us to our final question for today. He writes, would you allow an innocent party that has remarried that had been divorced to serve as a deacon or deaconess?
SPEAKER 02 :
Of course I would, because one follows from the other, that the purpose of getting a divorce is to remarry. And that's the reason that, of Christians, that I generally, if there's any hope at all of salvaging the marriage, I ask them not to get a divorce, but just a separation. and not a divorce because there may be a way of healing that. And a divorce means that a person wants to be remarried or can be remarried. And that's the only grounds that would be for a divorce would be to permit the other one. I remember I tried to get a lady in the church I last served to not get a divorce but separation. because she said to me that I do not want to marry, I just want to raise my boys and all that sort of thing. She put up quite a pitiful tale and so I told her I thought then if that's the way she felt and for the sake of the inheritance and legal matters that She wanted the divorce, and that is the reason. But that wasn't the reason. She wanted to get married again. And I always felt that she was wrong in that divorce, by the way. And probably she'd been wrong in the separation because she misrepresented things. The reason I tell that is because There are so many angles to this question today. And as I said, there's no verses of Scripture that just put it down just like you were asking for. There are no verses quite like that. Thou shalt not remarry if you have been divorced. It's not quite like that. The Lord Jesus made it very clear that there was a ground for divorce. And did Paul say that desertion would be one for a child of God? I think that that's probably what he's saying. But you need to know all the circumstances. There's so many angles to this. And I would suggest to this party that you consult some Bible teacher that is acquainted with the circumstances there and could give you, I think, a much more definite answer than I could. Mine is broad, I think, and all comprehensive. I don't mind facing up to it, but the point is you need specific advice for a specific case. I have a notion the way you ask it that it's been the policy of that church not to follow this. And if that is true, you would not want to make an issue on an individual. Wait later on and try to get the policy changed. When it hinges on an individual, you embarrass the individual and cause deep and hurt feelings.
SPEAKER 01 :

SPEAKER 01 :
The foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faithful.
SPEAKER 02 :
Have you ever wondered if we can out-sin God? Or to put it another way, can we ever sink so low and sin so much that God's grace can't reach us? Well, welcome to Through the Bible. I'm so glad that you're here as Dr. J. Vernon McGee answers these important questions and so many more as we dive into Hosea 1. Known as one of the minor prophets, and you'll hear Dr. McGee take exception to that description, minor, Hosea is really a fascinating book. It begins with a big scandal, one that could show up on any made-for-TV movie. You know, but ultimately, when we get to the end of this book, I think what you'll remember most is the amazing depth of God's love for every one of us. I'm Steve Schwetz, and before we get started, Greg and I have got some listener stories that we want to share with you.
SPEAKER 03 :
And today, Steve, we want to do something that we do from time to time, which is reflect on our core values and how they are very real. They're not just sort of statements that you put on a poster on a wall. And one of our core values that we have been taught by Dr. McGee, and he was taught by Jesus, so that's a pretty good chain of reference. Yeah. is that we are simply called to fling the seed of the Word of God. And we have just heard so many stories here in North America and around the world of we fling the seed, others pick it up, and then they fling it some more.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, absolutely. I think of the illustration of the seed that we're flinging. The Lord keeps putting more seed in this bucket, and we keep throwing it out, and we're not piling seed on seed. There's new opportunities that the Lord is bringing to us that we've talked about this before. Neither one of us is smart enough to know what we're going to go to. Now, we're good stewards, and we plan to an extent, but so much of the growth of this ministry into different aspects of it has not come from Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER 03 :
We haven't sat in a conference room and planned out the future.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah, I think about using that Bible bus pass. I mean, I've used it myself. I'm on an international flight into, I think I was going to Dubai, and I start chatting with one of the stewards. And the person says, hey, I used to listen on KFAX out of San Francisco. And it's like, oh, well, you can't listen to it anymore because your flight schedule. Well, here's the Through the Bible app with the QR code on it. And now she's listening again to the program. Yeah.
SPEAKER 03 :
And we've heard over the years some pretty cool stories about truck drivers who give out Bible passes at truck stops. We've heard about people even paying to put up billboards, make bumper stickers, license plate frames, all kinds. We've heard about families who use the World Prayer Team for their homeschool kids.
SPEAKER 02 :
Yeah. Another way that people are starting to use the resources of Through the Bible is the Bible Companions. Oh, yes. Which I love. I'm looking at one. one of them i mean one of that the bible is a person that's using them yes we have yeah that's me we have uh the entire new testament done and they are an outstanding free by the way yes resource that you can use electronically for your own home bible study and if you do want the printed copy we can get those to you i believe we're bundling them in 10 packs we're trying to get the price down as low as we can remember digital is free for us because it's almost nothing to distribute it Paper costs money. Shipping costs money. So we cover our costs there. But it's a great way to introduce and fling the seed through the Bible by getting your friends and family interested in studying God's word introduced to Dr. McGee through these Bible companions.
SPEAKER 03 :
I love it. And so we also have some fresh stories of listeners. You want to read this one from Krista in England?
SPEAKER 02 :
Yes, it says, please send me a pack of the Bible bus passes so that I can pass them on and encourage people in my community. I have been on the Bible bus now for a while and I'm still going strong. It's become a regular part of my day, a snack-sized portion of the Bible that I can now not do without. I regularly listen to the daily message two to three times just to make sure I haven't missed something. If we are driving in the car, my two little ones also listen with me And they now know the theme song by heart. It's interesting. I've heard that before with kids that don't understand, but they know the theme song. I am so enthused by Dr. McGee and his direct and unwavering truth when unpacking the whole Bible. I am learning so much and have spoken to a few people about him and the amazing message and truthful saving grace the Lord Jesus Christ longs for us to experience. I look forward to being able to hand out some of the Bible bus passes to sow the seed further. Now, I just want to point out, remember, this person was from England, Yorkshire, England to be specific, not exactly the Bible Belt of Europe.
SPEAKER 03 :
No, not at all. And I felt the same way. I was like, Yes, this is great. Someone in England is passionate about the word of God. Now, I think we have time enough to hear from Joyce from the USA who says, hi there. Well, Joyce, hi. Greg and Steve say hi. She says, I'm writing to request the Bible bus passes to share with people. I still send Christmas cards and thought it might be nice to add one in our card this year. Good idea, Joyce. I really appreciate Through the Bible and the letters you read at the beginning and the projects you share are so encouraging. I know the people doing the translating and recording in other languages are facing obstacles and resistance to getting the programs ready, and I appreciate their faithful perseverance. I record Bible verse songs and get them up on YouTube to help kids memorize the verses. Every day I face some sort of issue that tries to discourage me from persevering. So thinking of those folks doing these programs in other languages, it's obvious to me that they have lots of resistance from our enemy. May God richly bless you and them for hanging in there no matter what.
SPEAKER 02 :
So encouraging. Thank you for that, Joyce. Let me pray for us as we begin. Heavenly Father, we're so thankful for the wonderful opportunity you give us to fling the seed, the good news of Jesus Christ. I pray that you continue to bless the ministry through the Bible as it goes around the world, and bless us now as we seek to understand your word better. In Jesus' name, amen. Open your Bible to Hosea 1, and let's get started going through the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee.
SPEAKER 04 :
Now, I return today to the prophecy of Hosea. For the past two times, you've listened to a message that we gave some time ago as a sermon, but we felt it furnished a proper introduction to Hosea. This man is a remarkable prophet, and I personally do not like the classification of major and minor prophets. Actually, that was put in by the church, I suppose, about the third century. It was not that way in the Hebrew Bible. And Hosea was just put with the other prophets and was not put last in the Old Testament. If they had waited until I got here to make an arrangement of the books of the Bible, I would have made the arrangement of putting the prophetic books with the historical books, the ones they belong with. And if you noted that practically all of the writing prophets Their message belongs to the divided kingdom. When the kings failed, God raised up prophets to speak to the nation. And these men, every one of them are outstanding. And just because some of them didn't write long prophecies, after all, you wouldn't want to call Elijah a minor prophet, would you? He'd be a mini-minor because he never wrote any prophecies. If Elijah might be classified the first, John the Baptist, the last of the prophets, never wrote anything, and yet he was a prophet of God and announced the coming of the Savior. So that when we come here to the prophecy of Hosea, we're coming to one of the great books of the Bible. It actually belongs before Jeremiah. Hosea was contemporary with Isaiah and Micah. and also his compatriot in the northern kingdom, Joel. Hosea and Joel in the north, Isaiah and Micah in the southern kingdom. And this man Hosea would compare to Jeremiah. Jeremiah is the last prophet before the southern kingdom went into captivity. But over a hundred years before that, Hosea had been the prophet in the northern kingdom, and he occupied the same position of warning the nation, and he did it with a broken heart. But his broken heart comes from an experience that he's had, and that's what we've been dealing with. You see, Jeremiah, his was personal, but nevertheless, it was more public. He loved his nation. And he was a tenderhearted man that broke his heart to have to give them a harsh message. But that's the kind of a man God chose. Now, I don't consider Hosea a tenderhearted man like Jeremiah. But this man had an experience. And as we've seen the past two days, he comes out of a broken home with a broken heart. And we're going into detail now into the text. And from that broken home and that broken heart where a wife had been unfaithful to him and had become a harlot, he even loved her so much, he went back and took her again and she played the harlot again. This man with hot tears rushing down his cheeks, walks out before the nation, and he says, I want to tell you how God feels about you because I feel the same way. I've had a personal experience in my own home, and this man with a broken heart could speak to his nation, you see. Now, with that in mind, let's look here for just a few moments at the outline that we've made of this book. Very simple outline. Actually, in just two major divisions, we have 14 chapters here. Actually, more than you have in the book of Daniel, yet we call this a minor prophet. And we have in the first three chapters that which is personal. And that's the prophet and his faithless wife, Gomer. It's the scandal of his home and the gossip of the town that we get in the first three chapters. Then we have the prophetic. It's the Lord and the faithless nation, Israel, from chapter 4 through 14. So now we come in chapter 1 to the marriage of Hosea and Gomer, the harlot. Let's read this as we move along. Verse 1 again, the word of the Lord that came unto Hosea, the son of Bere, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. Now, these were the kings in the south at this particular time. And in the days of Jeroboam, the son of Joash, king of Israel, he in the north. Now, you can't have them any worse than what we got here in the way of kings in the northern kingdom. Now, we have the time given to us. Verse 2, the beginning of the word of the Lord by Hosea. This is the way that God approached the prophet, and it's a rather startling thing. And the Lord said to Hosea, go, take unto thee a wife of harlotry. and children of harlotry, for the land hath committed great harlotry, departing from the Lord. Now, I highly recommend the Scofield Reference Bible. If you don't have one, you ought to get one. I still use the old one a great deal, but right now I have before me the new Scofield Reference, and I recommend it. Some people get the idea that those of us who use and recommend the Schofield Bible, that we feel like the notes are inspired. Now, just to show you that I don't believe they're inspired, I want to say I totally disagree with the first statement that you have here in the way of notes for this verse. And I'm reading the note. God did not command Hosea to take an immoral wife, but permitted him to carry out his desire to marry Gomer, warning him that she would be unfaithful and using the prophet's sad experience as a basis for the presentation of lessons about God's relation to Israel. Now, I consider this a very nice way to get God off of the hook. But you don't have to get him off the hook. He takes full responsibility for this. And the way I understand this is that the Lord said to Hosea, go. And my parents said that to me as a boy, go someplace, go to the store or go to school. I always interpreted that as a command. And I'm of the opinion that this is not just a permission, it's a command. Because this man, Hosea, as we've said in the message that we've given, a young man there in the northern kingdom, probably in the Ephraim country, this beautiful girl that he met, he fell madly in love with her. And then she played the harlot. And naturally, he wanted to put her aside. He wanted to marry her, but he wouldn't dare do it in the little town. And the Mosaic law said, stone her. What's he going to do? God says, go and marry her. And God's actually asking him to break the Mosaic law. Somebody says, well, that's terrible. Not when God says you to do it, friends. God said to him, Hosea, you were in love with her. Now you want to put her aside. I don't want you to put her aside. I want you to marry her. And he said that she's a wife of harlotry. She's played the harlot and children of harlotry. Apparently, there was a record in the family of that. Then he's going to make it clear to him at the beginning how he's going to use this in this prophet's life. He says, for the land, that is now the northern kingdom, hath committed great harlotry, departing from the Lord. Now he's comparing that which is physical harlotry or physical adultery to that which is spiritual adultery or spiritual harlotry. And that, you'll find, is applicable to the believer today. You can play fast and loose with God, and you're nothing in the world but a harlot, a spiritual harlot in his sight. That's exactly the language that he uses, and God uses pretty plain language. And I could wish today the pulpit was a little stronger than it is. We are trying to be very nice today, all of us are. And as a result, we're not really sometimes as strong as the Word of God. Now, will you notice, we move on. Verse 3 now of chapter 1 of Hosea. So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblayan. who conceived and bore him a son. And the Lord said unto him, Call his name Jezreel, for yet a little while, and I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and I will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel. Now we can see readily not only the marriage, but the children are going to present here a real spiritual lesson for the nation Israel. Jezreel is the name of the sons. And it means God will scatter and God will avenge the blood of Jezreel. Now, Jezreel is the name of a city. I've been through the ruins of it. And it's the name of a famous plain. I've been through that. I'm sure that many of you have. We call it Armageddon, actually. Esdraelon, the Valley of Esdraelon. And it has a long, bloody history in the past. and still has and will have in the future. Now this is a son. God is going to scatter the northern kingdom. And you remember Isaiah's children had a spiritual message for the nation. Now I read verse 6. And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Lo-ruhamah. Now, what does Lo-Ruhamah mean? And by the way, you have a whole lot of daughters in your family and you've run out of names. I've got several suggestions to make to you. And here's one of them, Lo-Ruhamah. I don't know whether you'd want to use it or not because it means unpity. And this has a tremendous message. Listen to it. Call her name Lo-Ruhamah, for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel, but I will utterly take them away. There's always been the question of whether it's possible for a person to step over a line and the grace of God not be able to reach them. And there are those that believe that you could never step over that line. Then there are those that believe that you can step over the line. Well, may I give you my viewpoint of it, and you can take my judgment for what it's worth, but I think the meaning is actually somewhere between. And this is what I mean, and I'm not trying to run with the hare and with the hounds, both in this, but I do not believe you can ever get to a place where the grace of God couldn't reach down and touch you. They just don't get that low that the grace of God can't go down and get you. But wait just a minute. You can keep on sinning in the face of the grace and mercy of God and keep turning it down and keep turning away from God as these people were doing. And there comes a day. When you've stepped over a boundary, and it doesn't mean the grace of God can't reach you, but it does mean that there'll be nothing in you that the grace of God can lay hold of. I think I've used this illustration recently about when I first came to Pasadena as pastor in a church here. That's been many years ago, back in about 1940. And shortly after I came here, a wife, wanted me to go see her sick husband. He was at home and dying there. I went to see him, and I presented the gospel to him. She wanted me to, and he was a very polite man. He listened to me. He said, Dr. McGee, you know, I would say yes, I will accept Christ as my Savior. In fact, I'm going to do it. But he said, I want to tell you this. I have played and trifled with God all my life. I have been down to an altar 25 times. I have promised him. And then I've turned from him. And I've never been sincere. And I'll be honest with you. I can't tell you right now when I tell you I'll accept Christ whether I'm sincere or not. And all I could do at the funeral, when I looked down at him, could say under my breath, oh, God, I hope he was sincere. I hope he really meant it. I hope the grace of God reached down and touched him. But you can trifle with God. This nation did. And the day came, God says, I'll no longer have mercy on you. And that day came. It was a tremendous day, by the way. Now he says, verse 7, but I will have mercy upon the house of Judah. Now, God said, I'm not ready yet to judge the house of Judah. Why? Well, for the sake of David, God said for the sake of David, he wouldn't divide the kingdom under Solomon. He said for the sake of David again and again that he would save the southern kingdom. Well, may I say to you that somebody may want to criticize this and say that's not fair. Well, I don't know whether it's fair or not, but I thank God, friends, that God showed mercy to me. And that he was patient and continued to show mercy. And he continues today to show mercy. He says, I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and I'll save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen. Now, he says, I'm not going to save them by the fact that they've got phantom jets and atom bombs. I'm not going to save them by the means of arms. And if you want to read that story, it's a tremendous story of how God delivered these people. You'd have to go back into 1 Kings. No, you'd have to go to 2 Kings, the 19th chapter, and to Isaiah 37. You'll read how God miraculously delivered these people, the southern kingdom at this time. But he didn't deliver the northern kingdom. Now, will you notice verse 8? Now, when she had weaned Lo-Ruhamah, takes about a couple of years over in that country to wean a child, sometimes three years. She conceived and bore a son. Now, here's another son. Then said God, call his name Lo-Ami, for ye are not my people and I will not be your God. Now, if that was the only verse in the Bible, I would agree with the amillennialists today that God is through with the nation Israel. And I wish devoutly that even many of our premillennial brethren would quit reaching in and pulling a verse out here and a verse out there. and saying this is being fulfilled. I challenge anybody to read the prophecy of Hosea and come up with an intelligent answer that says God is through with the nation Israel. Now just read the next verse and we'll be clear on this. Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered. And that's a marvelous thing. They have been decimated again and again by persecution. Think what Hitler did. And here's a marvelous prophecy that he's going to increase their number. And he says, and it shall come to pass that in the place where it was said unto them, you're not my people, there it shall be said unto them, you're the sons of the living God. God is not through with them. You just have to keep reading the Bible, friend, and don't pull one verse out. Now will you notice verse 11? Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together. The nation will come together. There's no ten lost tribes, by the way. And appoint themselves one head. They don't have that, and they're not all in agreement, even over in Israel today, I can assure you. And they shall come up out of the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel. My, what a wonderful prophecy this is here. Verse 1 of chapter 2. Say ye unto your brethren, Ami, and to your sisters, Ruhamah. That is, you are pitted now, and you are my people. God is not through with the nation Israel. Now, I'm going to develop that farther when we get to the third chapter. But there are too many people today that are saying that the present return of the nation Israel to that land is a fulfillment of prophecy in the Old Testament. I totally disagree with that viewpoint. That's not a fulfillment of the prophecy of the Old Testament. And I'm going to talk on that. I think I'll get that far next time. If I don't, it's coming up in the near future. So until next time, may God richly bless you, my beloved.
SPEAKER 02 :
We've got a lot ahead of us in Hosea. I'm Steve Schwartz and I'll meet you back here next time. Until then, to be in touch, call 1-800-65-BIBLE or visit ttb.org. Or better yet, download our app and take through the Bible with you wherever you go.
SPEAKER 01 :
All to him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.
SPEAKER 02 :
Our story on the Bible Bus today is just one step in a five-year journey through the entire Word of God. Come along for the ride, and you'll study both the Old Testament and New Testament, discovering God's great redemption story. Is this your story too?
