We delve into the various interpretations of salvation across different religious groups and contrast these with biblical teachings. The episode highlights key passages from the Bible, emphasizing obedience and the role of both God’s grace and man’s actions in the path to salvation. Join us as we reflect on how these teachings can provide guidance and hope in our daily lives and spiritual practices.

There are many wonderful questions in the Bible that deserve a biblical answer therein. What must I do to be saved is one of those questions. That’s our study today from the International Gospel Hour. Please stay with us.
SPEAKER 02 :
It’s time for our broadcast from the International Gospel Hour. I’m Jay Webb, and welcome to our study today as we embrace God’s Word to help us meet the challenges of today. Let’s open our Bibles and open our heart for this time of Bible study with our speaker Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour, a broadcast of the Churches of Christ. Here’s Jeff.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, thank you always to our J-Web and greetings to all of you. Always good to have you with us for our broadcast from the International Gospel Hour. And the past few broadcasts have carried forth a theme throughout the broadcast. This actually makes broadcast number five. to where we have honored the efforts of a brother in Christ, a friend, and a beloved encourager of our work at International Gospel Hour, and his name, David Payton. Now, David passed from this life in January 2025 due to ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, from which he battled for over two years. This week I’ve been sharing some of David’s works and his writings, and I am going to share a special one in a few moments, What Must I Do to Be Saved? But before I do that, I want to share with you a couple of tools that may be of help to you in your labors and in the things of which you are dealing with in your life. You know, I was reading another article that David had penned called Getting Beyond the Past, and he ended the article by saying, Let’s put the past behind us and live every day like we have never lived before. You know, although David had ALS, and I’ve often, I said once, rather, in a Facebook post, that ALS to David would mean a loving servant. Because, you know, David served and lived every day. Through some awesome advantages in technology, he continued to preach and write well. And how, with the use of his eyes only, he could write, preach, drive his wheelchair. I can’t emphasize enough. It was something to see. What I want to do first is share with you a link to a program called Truth on Wheels by Don Blackwell of the Gospel Broadcasting Network. And I’ve tried to mention this each broadcast today. because we very well may have those in our audience who are dealing with a variety of suffering, and maybe even with ALS. I want to send that link to you, and I think the best way we can do it If you’ll call us at 855-444-6988 and simply leave us your email address. Now please spell it for us and we will send you that link through your email address. Again, just call us at 855-444-6988 and leave us your email address. Please spell it for us and we will send you the link to Truth on Wheels with the interview with David Payton and his wife Kelly that was done by Don Blackwell of the Gospel Broadcasting Network. I’d love for you to see this, and maybe there are some things within that will help you as you battle suffering that you are facing. Here’s what else I want to offer. If you don’t want the email link, I’d like to send you a book, courtesy of our friends at Apologetic Express, called Why People Suffer by Dave Miller. Now, all you have to do, you can use the same number, 855-444-6988, and leave us your name and address, and just say suffer, and then we will mail that book to you. And so you can do it with the same phone call, for that matter. If you want to just call us one time. and leave your name and address and just say suffer and then spell out your email address, then we’ll send you the link as well. Hope I’m not making that too confusing, folks. But we want to help all of our listeners. And we have such a wide audience worldwide. And we want to help you any way that we can. And now, for our study today, I appreciate Brother David Payton and his writings that he left behind so that those could use his studies and learn more of the Word of God. Biblically based, sincerely done, such a humble soul was David. And he wrote one concerning identifying the New Testament church as and how the New Testament church gives a scriptural answer to the question, What must I do to be saved? You know, if you were to randomly call the religious groups in your area and ask them, What must I do to be saved? You would get several different answers. Some would say you are saved by God’s grace and there’s nothing you need to do to be saved. Others would say that you are saved by faith and faith alone. I mean, the moment you believe, you are saved. Others may say that you’re saved by repentance and faith. Regardless of the answer we receive, we should always ask ourselves the question, what does the Bible teach? Well, the Bible teaches that God wants all to be saved. In 1 Timothy 2 and verse 4, Who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth? When it comes to salvation, there are two sides. There’s God’s side and man’s side. God’s side is grace. For in Ephesians 2 and verse 8, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God. Now what about man’s side? Is there anything that God requires of mankind for salvation to occur? Let’s listen to the Bible. Man must be obedient. Hebrews 5 verses 8 and 9 says, Though he was a son, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered. And having been perfected, he became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey him. According to this passage, man’s salvation hinges upon his obedience. What is involved in obedience? We must hear God’s word. So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, Romans 10, 17. We must believe that Christ is the Son of God. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins, for if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins, John 8 and verse 24. We must repent of our sins. In Acts 17 and verse 30, truly these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent. We must confess our faith in Christ as the Son of God. For Jesus said in Matthew 10, 32, Therefore whoever confesses me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven. We must be baptized for the remission of sins. For Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, Acts 2 and verse 38. At this point, the Bible teaches that God adds an individual to the church, the body of those who are saved, Acts 2.47. Friend, if you are a member of a church that does not teach the plan that was just revealed from God’s Word, you’re in the wrong church. And I plead with you that you will search out the church that teaches the full, complete plan that is found in God’s Word. Friends, I am grateful that our beloved brother David Payton, of whom we have studied his material this week, wrote such a thorough and good article, biblically based, spiritually driven, and to teach us what we must do to be saved. Friends, we’ve offered some material to help you in your studies and dealing with suffering and things of that nature. But I’ve got one more tool that I’d like to offer to you as well. And I will defer to our J-Web who has a free home Bible study just for you. Here is our J-Web.
