00:00:05 Colin Cook
So we have this wonderful passage in Romans, Chapter 14, full of beauty, full of hope, full of inspiration, yet so dumbed down by so many Christians who limited by limited.
00:00:20 Colin Cook
By their own views of salvation.
00:00:23 Colin Cook
This is the verse for to this end, Christ died and rose and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Now I talked about this yesterday, but I want to talk about it more today. Umm, actually, let’s read a little more for context.
00:00:41 Colin Cook
To go back a little bit for context 4, verse seven for none of us lives to himself and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord.
00:00:54 Colin Cook
And if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lords. For to this end, Christ died and Rose and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
00:01:10 Colin Cook
Now, why do I say that? This is a dumbed down it has been numbed. It has been limited in its in our understanding of it. Why? Because we are thinking that it’s talking about.
00:01:25 Colin Cook
Or rather, that we have in the back of our mind that some are saved and most are lost, some will be saved and most will be lost, and therefore Christ isn’t the Lord of the Dead who will die without him. They are lost and sent away. Certainly they are sent into judgment that Sir revealed.
00:01:46 Colin Cook
That when Jesus says depart from me, I never knew you. But what is that judgment all about? Is it to send them off forever into eternal oblivion? Or is it to bring them to him through judgements?
00:02:01 Colin Cook
What this is saying is now, notice it carefully for this. To this end, Christ died and rose again. Rather Christ died and rose and lived again, that he might be Lord.
00:02:17 Colin Cook
Lord.
00:02:18 Colin Cook
That means king.
00:02:21 Colin Cook
That means having ownership over those you reign.
00:02:27 Colin Cook
It means that Jesus Christ is the owner of the people, that he reigns over and notice as well.
00:02:39 Colin Cook
That it is Christ who’s doing this reigning.
00:02:43 Colin Cook
And Christ is, of course, savior Jesus. When we speak about Jesus, we mean Jesus as the Savior. For to this end, then Christ.
00:02:56 Colin Cook
Died and rose and lived again, that he might be that he might reign over the dead, that he might be savior over the dead.
00:03:06 Colin Cook
But we have limited this kind of thinking. We say well, they can’t be savior of the dead if they’re dead, they’re dead. And that’s finished because they’ve had their chance in this life.
00:03:16 Colin Cook
But we have so much evidence in scripture that God hasn’t done with the human race. Once they’re dead. Now let me bring you take you to the incredible passage in the Book of Isaiah. It’s chapter 25, and it begins at verse 6.
00:03:39 Colin Cook
And in this mountain, the Lord of hosts will make for all people.
00:03:45 Colin Cook
A feast of choice pieces. A feast of wines on the leaves. A fat things full of marrow of well refined wines on the leaves, and he will destroy on this mountain.
00:04:00 Colin Cook
The surface of the covering now listen to this. The surface of the covering cast over all people.
00:04:08 Colin Cook
And the veil that is spread over all nations.
00:04:13 Colin Cook
He will swallow up death forever.
00:04:18 Colin Cook
Now notice that.
00:04:20 Colin Cook
This is a covering.
00:04:22 Colin Cook
That is, over all people.
00:04:25 Colin Cook
Cast over everybody and it’s a veil that is spread over all the nations. What is that? Covering and veil? Its death.
00:04:34 Colin Cook
And God in Christ is going to swallow up that veil and covering destroyed and swallow up death forever.
00:04:46 Colin Cook
And the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces. The rebuke of his people. He will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.
00:04:59 Colin Cook
So you see, when Jesus is Lord of the dead, when he reigns over the dead.
00:05:06 Colin Cook
It means that he is bringing those people to the knowledge of the Lord during their death and when their resurrection takes place in the judgment or before whether it’s before the whether they are raised to life in the judgment or not, they will be brought to say to him and then raised.
00:05:28 Colin Cook
And thus the judgment will be the end of death. Remember that in the lake of fire.
00:05:38 Colin Cook
Death itself and the grave is thrown into it.
00:05:44 Colin Cook
What does that mean?
00:05:46 Colin Cook
It means that death itself will no longer live. It will no longer be active. That is the work of Jesus to bring people to him from all corners of the earth and all eras of history.
00:06:04 Colin Cook
Take a consideration, for instance of Chapter 22 of were rather Psalm 22. All the ends of the.
00:06:13 Colin Cook
World.
00:06:14 Colin Cook
Shall remember and turn to the Lord and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.
00:06:21 Colin Cook
For the Kingdom is the Lord’s and he rules over the nations all the prosperous of the Earth shall eat and worship all those who go down to the dust shall bow before him. Even he who cannot keep himself alive.
00:06:39 Colin Cook
This is just astonishing. We need to take our hand off some of these verses and let them speak for themselves.
00:06:48 Colin Cook
The hope is enormous. It is beyond all things that we can imagine. If you have any doubts about what the judgments in the Bible lead to, whether they lead to death or life, then read again the book of Ezekiel.
00:07:04 Colin Cook
And I mentioned this the other day that there are six. I think it’s 64 references or 64 expressions in the book of Ezekiel that say in various forms, then they shall know that I am the.
00:07:20 Colin Cook
Lord.
00:07:22 Colin Cook
And when will they know?
00:07:25 Colin Cook
Well, some come to God by faith in Jesus Christ, and they know because the revelation of the gospel of the good News of Christ has led them to the Lord.
00:07:37 Colin Cook
But most resist, don’t they?
00:07:40 Colin Cook
What happens to those who resist?
00:07:42 Colin Cook
They are handed over.
00:07:45 Colin Cook
To the powers that they choose instead of God.
00:07:49 Colin Cook
That’s Romans 1, verses 2426 and 28. All mankind is suppressing God.
00:07:56 Colin Cook
The few, the remnant who?
00:07:58 Colin Cook
End that suppression are the ones who have received Jesus Christ as their savior. But what happens to the rest? They are handed over to the powers that they choose instead of him until those powers bring them to the end of themselves. Bring them to ruin.
00:08:16 Colin Cook
And then what happens?
00:08:18 Colin Cook
Then they call upon the Lord or are positioned for mercy.
00:08:24 Colin Cook
And God then does something that is astonishing. It’s described in Romans, Chapter 11, verse 32. God has committed them all that, not them. There is not a there. There is no Greek word in the this particular verse. For them God has committed.
00:08:44 Colin Cook
All to disobedience that he might have mercy on all.
00:08:52 Colin Cook
The word committed there.
00:08:54 Colin Cook
Can be translated, imprisoned or trapped.
00:09:00 Colin Cook
They are trapped. We are all trapped in disobedience and the word disobedience there is actually referring to the disobedience of unbelief. God has trapped us all in unbelief, that is, those who have not yet received Christ.
00:09:18 Colin Cook
So that in the judgment, when the revelation of their sins and the revelation of the glory of God and the revelation of the lamb standing by on the throne, as though it had been slain when that revelation is so overwhelming.
00:09:35 Colin Cook
That people bow before him.
00:09:39 Colin Cook
And he will then have mercy on all. And so you see, we need to take these verses.
00:09:46 Colin Cook
Very, very careful. Rather, we need to take the lid off these verses. Shall I put it that way?
00:09:55 Colin Cook
Stop holding them down and limiting them by your own understanding of the gospel. When Paul says.
00:10:04 Colin Cook
That to this end.
00:10:07 Colin Cook
Christ died and Rose and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. You and I need to be able to say, Father. I’m afraid of death or father. I don’t know what’s going. What’s going to happen to me? I’ve put my faith in Jesus.
00:10:27 Colin Cook
But sometimes I doubt and I wonder what my destiny will be.
00:10:32 Colin Cook
But I based upon this message, this verse that you have given to me today.
00:10:38 Colin Cook
Thy faith. I say you, dear Lord, reign over my death as well as my life. You reign over what happens to me when I die.
00:10:51 Colin Cook
As well as reigning over to me when when I live and who is you who reign? Who are you who reign but the savior, my savior, Jesus Christ. I therefore thank you, dear God, and praise you that my destiny is sure. And I give my heart to you. And I put my trust in you.
00:11:14 Colin Cook
Because you create.
00:11:15 Colin Cook
Added me and you will see me through to my new creation in the Kingdom of God. And then of course, this all brings us to the most practical issue of all, which is the next line in the next verse. But why do you judge your brother?
00:11:35 Colin Cook
Boy, what a statement that is in light of what we’ve just studied. If Jesus Christ reigns over the dead and the living, every single one of us.
00:11:47 Colin Cook
What right do we have to judge our brother now? You don’t have to judge your brother verbally. You can just avoid him. You can just consider him less than you and less noticeable and worthy.
00:12:02 Colin Cook
You can simply dismiss him, neglect him. We are all guilty of it. And thanks be to.
00:12:09 Colin Cook
God, that our guilt, even for that neglect of our brother, is taken care of by Jesus in his cross and the sacrifice he has made for us. But nevertheless, we need to grow as much as we can in caring for one another, in reaching out and saying, OK, this brother may be poorer, he may not be dressed as well as I am.
00:12:31 Colin Cook
He may not be as educated as I am. He may not look as fine as I do, but he is my brother. I will not judge him thereby. He belongs to Christ. Christ Reigns on.
00:12:43 Colin Cook
For him, Christ is his savior. Christ owns him whether he’s living or dying.
00:12:51 Colin Cook
And it is that kind of faith that we have that will cause our love to expand. It will cause our compassion to, to reach out to those that just do not seem worthy, worthy of notice.
00:13:08 Colin Cook
Well, there’s so much here that we need to.
00:13:10 Colin Cook
Know.
00:13:11 Colin Cook
But what we do know for ourselves is that Jesus Christ is Lord.
00:13:18 Colin Cook
Over us reigning over us both in life and in death.
