Explore the profound teachings centered around Nicodemus's encounter with Jesus and the pivotal phrase 'born of water and spirit.' Jeff Archie walks us through the scriptures, emphasizing the importance of baptism and the role of the Holy Spirit in this transformative process. This episode seeks to clear misconceptions and offers comprehensive insights into how these teachings still hold relevance today. The International Gospel Hour invites listeners to a deeper understanding and appreciation of these foundational truths to strengthen their faith.
SPEAKER 01 :
Nicodemus came to Jesus by night with a question of being born again. Friends, you have come to this broadcast today, and let's see that answer that's coming up from the International Gospel Hour. Stay with us.
SPEAKER 03 :
Hi, this is Jay Webb for International Gospel Hour. Welcome to our broadcast today. For over 90 years, churches of Christ have proclaimed God's Word through our broadcasts. Just ahead is another Bible-based lesson with Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour. Let's begin.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, thank you always to our J-Web. Greetings to all of you. Delighted to have you with us once again to join us for our studies from the Word of God here from the International Gospel Hour. We've been on the air since 1934. Now, someone told me recently, Jeff, I don't think you've been around since 1934, and that is true. But the broadcast has, and most importantly, the Word of God has, and continues to be brought forth. I think of the wonderful assurance we have from John 8, 31 and 32, when Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "'If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.'" Friends, can we think of a better place than to abide than within the Word of God, the truth that makes men free? As we begin today, dear listeners, would you not agree that our youth of today need to know the truth of God? From the Old Testament in Deuteronomy 6 to the New Testament of Ephesians 6, we see the importance of youth learning of the truth of God early in life, and especially the challenges that are faced in the teenage years. And with that said, here is our J-Web with something special for our youth, and then we'll come back and begin our program and our study today.
SPEAKER 03 :

SPEAKER 01 :
Our study today is The New Birth. We are deeply grateful for such a fine audience always, and as we study this subject together, we hope it will be of help to you. We are discussing the new birth, as described by Christ in John 3 and verse 5. From the outset, kind friends, water means water in John 3 verse 5, and that it actually refers to baptism. And it is my purpose to show from God's book the truth on this subject. Do you know why so many preachers are fighting and rebelling against this truth? The devil knows that since water refers to baptism, it therefore makes baptism a necessity for salvation. For John 3 verse 3 says, Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Then in John 3 and verse 5, Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto you, except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Now the devil knows that there is no difference in these two statements. We know it too if we believe the Scriptures. The devil knows, as well as anyone else, that no man is ever saved until he is born again. He also knows that no man is ever born again until he is buried in water in the name of Christ for the remission of sins. We are commanded to give diligence to present ourselves approved unto God, workmen that need not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth, 2 Timothy 2.15. And Christ said, as noted earlier, You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. You remember, of course, that he also said in John 5, 39, You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life, and these are they which bear witness of me. And in Acts 17, verse 11, we read, Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so. So at this time, I will call to our attention John chapter 3, the first twelve verses. Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. The same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except one be born unto you, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, You must be born anew. The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but know not whence it comes, and whither it goes. So is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Are thou the teacher of Israel, and understand not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen, and you receive not our witness. If I told you earthly things, and you believe not, how shall you believe if I tell you heavenly things? These passages are very familiar to many of you, and I want us to analyze carefully the passages, especially John 3, 3 and John 3, 5. Our Lord pointed out the absolute necessity of the new birth when He said, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Since water refers to baptism in this passage, Christ is simply saying that except a man be baptized. Of course, it includes the part that the Holy Spirit plays through His law, the New Testament. The Spirit uses His sword, which is the word of God, Ephesians 6, 17. Christ, in verse 3, points out the necessity of the new birth. And in verse 5, he points out that it has two component parts, water and of the Spirit. Many people are perverters of these scriptures. I remember when a man learned that the late Brother N.B. Hardiman was a preacher, he said to him, Sir, I want to ask you a question. What do you think the word water means in John 3, verse 5? Brother Hardiman said, I think it means buttermilk. The man was greatly amazed, and he said, I have never heard anyone say that before. I don't think it means that. Then Brother Hardiman said words about like these, Sir, if water doesn't mean water in John 3, verse 5, how do you know that it doesn't mean buttermilk? If it doesn't mean water, then you have no way of knowing to what it refers, and therefore I think it means buttermilk. Now, Brother Hardiman then proceeded to point out that he did not really think that it meant buttermilk, but that water meant water. I have heard denominational preachers act as if it would choke them even to quote John 3, verse 5 correctly. I have heard them via radio quote it time and time again and pervert it by leaving water out and saying, "'Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God,' completely leaving water out of the quotation." They observed, as it were, the Passover. They just passed right over the word water and left it out. The truth is the word water means water. If it does not mean water, how are they always so sure that the word spirit means spirit? I have never heard any of them in my life who doubted that fact. Spirit means spirit. Well, if water does not mean water, how do they know that spirit does not mean something else? If water means something else, then spirit means something else. The truth is, water means water and spirit means spirit. Now, let's look at three passages that are parallel. They are John 3, verse 5, Ephesians 5, 26, and Titus 3, verse 5. Let's first look at them and consider them. John 3, 5, Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Ephesians 5, 26, that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word. Titus 3 and verse 5, not by works done in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit. Note in John 3, verse 5, that Christ points out the new birth consists of two parts. One must be born of water and of the Spirit. This is a good place to point out also that no one has been born again if he has had water sprinkled or poured upon him. This would be an utter impossibility. One cannot be born of that which is smaller than oneself. It is admitted by all that a thimble full of water is too little to effect a birth. Therefore one cannot be born of water when he has had a little water sprinkled or poured on him. Now I want to prove this, as Paul said in Colossians 1, verse 18, And he is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. As you remember, our Lord died and was placed in a borrowed tomb. You also recall that on the third day he burst the bars of death and hell, and that he came forth victorious and led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men when he ascended on high. Our Lord died and was buried and was covered from sight. A great stone was rolled against the door of the tomb. Now please note this carefully. Did you know that our Lord's resurrection from the tomb is referred to as a birth? Some years after this wonderful event, Paul wrote about it in the words of Colossians 1.18, and note the expression, the firstborn from the dead. Our Lord, when dead, did not have just a little dirt sprinkled or poured on him. He was put into Joseph's new tomb. He was buried out of sight, and a great stone was rolled to the mouth of the grave, and on the third day he came forth, and the Bible says that was a birth from the dead. Therefore one, when born of the water, is immersed, is buried, as was our Lord. In fact, Paul says that baptism is a burial. In Colossians 2 and verse 12, Having been buried with him in baptism, wherein you were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. Romans 6 and verse 4 says, We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death. that like as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life. Born of water, therefore, of necessity, requires an immersion in water for the remission of sins. Now let us now look again at John 3 and verse 5. Christ says that when one is born again, he is born of the Spirit. In John 3 verse 8 he adds, The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hear the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it comes, and whether it goes. So is every one that is born of the Spirit. I sometimes hear people say that the only part of the new birth members of the Church of Christ believe is that we are born of water. No, we are born of water and of the Spirit. Now, the Holy Spirit operates, of course, through His law, as He teaches us in Romans 8 and verse 2, For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and death. In James 1.21 we read, Wherefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your souls. Therefore, the Holy Spirit participates. The word from which we get the word spirit occurs 386 times in the Greek New Testament. 384 times it is translated spirit or its equivalent, ghost. One time it is translated life, Revelation 13, 15. In John 3, verse 8, it is translated wind. Some translations render it this way. The spirit breathes where he will and thou hearest the report of him. Well, how does that report come to us? In Romans 10, 17 we read, So belief comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Sometimes there are those who read this statement and imagine that when the Holy Spirit speaks, that He speaks miraculously, directly, and mysteriously. They even have a song they sing which states, Something got hold of me. I do not doubt something got hold of some of them, but it was emotionalism and misguided zeal that though I do not doubt their sincerity in many cases. But I want to raise this question and hope you will remember the answer to it. How were the voices of the Old Testament prophets heard every Sabbath day? Here's the answer. Acts 13.27 For they that dwell in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfill them by condemning him. Now what did he say? He said the voices of these prophets were heard every Sabbath. Well, how did they speak? They spoke by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, as stated in 2 Peter 1.21. For no prophecy ever came by the will of man, but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit. But Acts 13.27 says that when their writings were read and when the prophets heard them read, these were the voices of the prophets that were heard each Sabbath. Therefore, we do not deny that the voice of the Holy Spirit is heard. But the question is, how? The Bible says that it is by His law in Romans 8 and verse 2. Ephesians 6.17 says, And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. I might cut down a tree with an axe. Now the axe did not do it by itself, and I would not attempt to do it with my bare hands. There are two things true in this illustration. Number one, an axe was used. That was the instrument. Number two, there was someone on the other end of that axe exerting a force and bringing that force to beat on the tree. I want to make this especially clear because sometimes people do misunderstand. I once preached a sermon in which I suggested that I wanted to preach a lesson that was very specific. I pointed out that preachers talk in generalities, and since Paul had said, having therefore such a hope we use great boldness of speech, that I wanted to be very specific. I said that I intended to call on the name of a person involved in their sins before I finished. I'm sure that no one went to sleep during that sermon. All through the sermon I quoted passages and pointed out that this person is a liar and a slanderer and that, in fact, he has participated in and encouraged others to commit all types of sin. Near the conclusion, since I had promised to call this person by name, I quoted John 8, 44 and pointed out that I had made reference to the devil. The devil was a murderer and a liar and the instigator of all sin. That sermon had such a good effect that I repeated it at another congregation several But alas, one lady was about half asleep and evidently awakened about the time I used the word devil, and she went away and told that I called all the people there devils. Well, my point here, I do not want anyone to go to sleep and misunderstand. I want to make the point very clear that no person has ever been converted nor ever shall be converted without the participation of the Holy Spirit in that conversion. Let me emphasize that point once again. I don't know how many people that I have heard say, Oh, you don't believe in the Holy Spirit, do you? I know that these older brethren have had far more experience in this matter than I, but I have talked with many people about this matter, and even since this series of studies began, someone here has said to me, Oh, you don't believe in the Holy Spirit, do you? That was even said after we had studied the plan of salvation. In every case when a man is converted, the Holy Spirit operates. But how does He operate? In Ephesians 6, 17, Paul says, And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. That is the way He operated upon the hearts of the people on the day of Pentecost. For in Acts 2, verse 37, we read, Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? The Holy Spirit was indeed using his sword, his word, through Peter, the gospel preacher, and when they heard the powerful and convincing words, they were pricked or cut in their hearts. The Holy Spirit always participates in the conversion of an alien sinner, but he never operates in any fashion other than in using the New Testament, his word, the sword of the Spirit. Now someone might say, I would like for you to prove that. I repeat a passage that I have already referred to, which is James 1, verse 21. Wherefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. Now that he said the word is able to save your souls, I asked a preacher this question some time past. Since the Bible says that the Word is able to save, why do you say that the Holy Spirit must operate independent of and distinct from the Word of God and in a mysterious, better felt than told fashion? I could never get him to answer, and I know why. He would have to give up his doctrine or deny the Bible. Dear friends, we hope that this study of the new birth has been of help to you as we have discussed John 3 and verse 5 concerning the Holy Spirit and concerning being born of water and the Spirit. Due to our time restraints, we want to give due justice to the conclusion of this study and we will do so in our next broadcast. Let me state something about the lesson that you have heard. Our friend and encourager, Paul Sane of Pulaski, Tennessee, and his business, SanePublications.com, reprinted a book of sermons titled The Savior's Way close to 30 years ago. These sermons were proclaimed by the late Garland Elkins in 1965 at the Morrison, Tennessee, Church of Christ. And this is why you will hear me refer to meetings or when we were together this evening or something along that line, that I'm trying to adhere as close to the manuscript as possible. And rather the transcript, I should say. These messages are still relevant and worthy even to this day because the Bible is relevant as it ever was. And so it is a joy here at International Gospel Hour to bring forth lessons of the past that are as scriptural and powerful today that we may have the future as we look toward heaven and the Lord Jesus Christ. And so we will continue this study of the new birth. Due to the length of Brother Elkin's lessons, a lot of our topics will be handled on two or three parts, but it is our aim to divide those parts evenly for them to be understood promptly. So we are truly blessed and we are thankful that we can do this today. And we can bring forth these lessons. Now, friends, we've talked about being born of water and of the Spirit. And we will continue this study together in our next broadcast. I want to pause and say that here at International Gospel Hour, we are blessed to offer a variety of free materials for you and your study. SPEAKER 02 :
Hi, this is Jay Webb for International Gospel Hour. Welcome to our broadcast today. For over 90 years, churches of Christ have proclaimed God's Word through our broadcasts. Just ahead is another Bible-based lesson with Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour. Let's begin.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, thank you to our J-Web, and greetings to all of you. So good to have you with us today for our studies here from the International Gospel Hour. We say often we've been on the air or online since 1934, and how blessed we are, and we're able to be on the air that long due to wonderful, faithful listeners such as you. Please think with me for a moment about what is commonly called the golden rule in Matthew 7 and verse 12. Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets. Now please hear who is the first to make the move. How we want to be treated is the way we treat others. It starts with us as individuals. For example, if I desire to be treated friendly, then let me initiate the friendliness. That reminds us of Proverbs 18, 24. A man that has friends must show himself friendly. You know, if everyone in this world lived by the golden rule, without question, living would be better, would it not? And as we noted in the opening, God created man in His own image. Through His Word, the Holy Scriptures, God instructs us about His image. And if we follow His Word, we will imitate His image and what a beautiful world it would be. In a few moments, we're going to consider our text of Philippians 2, 1-4 to help us be more in the image of God. Before we do that, I'm going to defer to our J-Web with one of our good online tools from our friends at the Gospel Gazette. Thank you, Jeff.
SPEAKER 02 :

SPEAKER 01 :
And now, friends, our lesson text from Philippians 2, 1 through 4. Paul is writing to the church here at Philippi, the Christians. And he says, Therefore, if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interest, but also for the interest of others. Now, friends, Paul brings forth, if there be any consolation, if any, if any. Well, folks, the thing is, yes, the consolation is in Christ and comfort of love. And Paul is saying because of this, then let us respond this way. So let's think about it for a moment. As the image of God, well, let's be like-minded. That was the same plea Paul brought forth in 1 Corinthians 1 and verse 10. Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. Now keep that thought of like mind there for a moment, and let's move to number two. As the image of God, let's have the same love. In 1 Peter 1, 22 and 23, Peter said, Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit, in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and abides forever. Now friends, we're seeing from Philippians 2 how we can become more in the image of God. Here's a third one. As the image of God be of one accord. The word accord literally means of one soul, having your souls joined together. Allow Acts 4.32 to reflect of the church. Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul. Neither did anyone say any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. Now, when I take a look at the one, the one another, okay, same mind, loving one another, one heart, one soul. Now, if I want to be treated that way, then I am going to in turn treat others that way as I desire to be in the image of God as we all do. Here's the fourth one. Now, I asked moments ago to keep like-minded in mind. Now, Paul comes back here in Philippians 2, 1-4. As the image of God be of one mind. It's like here is a reminder. You know in Romans 12 and verse 5. So we being many are one body in Christ. And individually members of one another. So from like-minded to one mind shows us the growth and our aim, loving one another, the heart, the soul. Within the church, such will continue to grow. What a wonderful thought. Here's our next one. As the image of God, have the right motive. Later in Philippians 2 and verse 14, Paul says, Do all things without murmurings and disputings. So when they had matters that would arise, Paul said, do all things. Don't murmur. Don't complain. Don't dispute. Let's address these things properly. And we will if we are walking of one mind, being like-minded, with the same love, one heart, one soul. You see, once again, friends, we're looking out for not our own interests, but the interests of others. Here's the next one. As the image of God, be of a lowly mind. Let the like mind, the one mind, we're working together to have a lowly mind. We're reading of the teaching to the church here at Philippi. Listen to what Paul said to the church in Ephesians, or in Ephesus rather, the book of Ephesians, chapter 4, verses 1 through 3. I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with long-suffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Now, friends, the unity of the Spirit, God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, that's going to remain in unity. Nothing will tear them apart, but we must keep that in the bond of peace, and if we keep our focus there, then we humble ourselves with lowly minds, with the right motive. Lowly minds of one mind, like-minded, same love, one accord, all aimed toward the image of God. Back to our lesson text as the image of God. We esteem others better than ourselves. Again, friends, that's Matthew 7 and verse 12. Whatsoever you would that men do to you, here's the move. We go first. Do also to them. We can't be, well, they're that way. I'll treat them this way. No, no, friends. Christlike action in the image of God. Here's how we're going to do unto them. We make the first move with how we wish to be treated. And as the image of God, we look after each other's interest. In Romans 12 and verse 10, Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another. My, that would take us back to having the same love as we noted from 1 Peter 1, 22 and 23, loving one another with a pure heart fervently. The one mind, the one heart, the one soul. Friends, in order to reflect the image of God, these are things and how we must live. And friends, first and foremost, we must respond to God and obey the gospel of Christ. Before I can become all of these we mentioned, we must obey the gospel of Jesus Christ. We have a new study that we are about to share with you on this broadcast. And friends, Let's just say it's time to go back to the Bible. Here is our J-Web with our new offer for a great Bible study online.
SPEAKER 02 :
Let's go back to the Bible, shall we? On International Gospel Hour, we always desire to go back to the Bible for our studies.

Today we want to give away the book, Does God Exist? written by Dave Miller. Here's all you do to receive your free book, Does God Exist? Call us toll free at 855-444-6988. Leave us your name and address and just say... Does God Exist? That's just the title of the book. That's all. Just leave your name and address and say, Does God Exist? And that's all you do. Now, you may also go to our website at internationalgospelhour.com. Click on the Contact tab and leave us the same information, your name and address, and just type, Does God Exist? in the message box. We have a number of different materials that we share, and that way helping us and being a little specific will make sure you get the right book. So thank you in advance for your help. Now, speaking of Apologetics Press, here's a few additional words about their work from our J-Web.
SPEAKER 03 :
A quick word about our friends at ApologeticsPress.org. For almost 50 years, these good folks have pursued and developed scripturally sound and scientifically accurate materials in the field of Christian apologetics. You've got to check out their website at apologeticspress.org. Peruse and download free material today.
SPEAKER 01 :
You know, friends, we really appreciate our J-Web. We always like to acknowledge Jay, and we appreciate him sharing that. So please reach out for the free book today and access the free material there at ApologeticExpress.org, and you can access that every day. You know, in a day of compromise, arbitration, and concession, the thought of there being only one way to live, you know, that's offensive to some people. But Jesus was not a lunatic when he affirmed, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes unto the Father but by me, John 14, 6. Let's think about that today. First of all, friends, you know Jesus is the way out. He is the way out of sin. Sin deceives and many are enslaved without realizing it. Some say, like the ancient Pharisees, in John 8, 33, we are not under bondage. This denial is based upon a limited understanding of sin and moral wrongdoing. Sin will manifest itself by blatant actions such as stealing, killing, and immorality, but may also be attitudes and ambitions. Only Jesus can deliver from the slavery of sin, John 8, 32, and Romans 6, 17 and 18. Second, Jesus is the way through. When illnesses, disappointments, and failures come, Jesus is the way through these difficulties. Just as Israel needed the cloud by day and light by night, so we need a guide that assists us through the dangers of evil and wrong. Jesus is also the way through an uncertain future. Jesus gives us hope for the future. And experience confirms the need for strong daily faith. Here's a third one. Jesus is the way in. Jesus gives life in abundance. Oh, all seek satisfaction. Yet some are confused in thinking an affluent life is equivalent to abundant living. But Jesus said the thief comes not but for to steal and to kill and to destroy. I am come that they might have life. and that they might have it more abundantly, John 10, verse 10. He is the way to have inexpressible joy, a condition much deeper and permanent than happiness. Happiness to many depends on circumstances. Yet Christ brings joy even in the midst of the most adverse circumstances. True joy in Jesus Christ does not rely on the circumstances. but will respond to the circumstances. Oh, the promise to the Christian from Ephesians 3, 20 and 21. Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Fourth, Jesus is the way up. He enables us to reach greater potential in our lives. We're made to love, worship, and serve the Lord. Someone once said, if you would find the best potatoes, go to Idaho. The best onions, go to Michigan. The best apples, go to Washington. The best peaches, go to Georgia. The best sailors, go to Annapolis. The best soldiers, go to West Point. But to find the best being, you must go to Jesus. He alone will lift you up to heights never imagined before. It is Peter in 2 Peter 1 verses 2-4 who said, Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue. by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

SPEAKER 01 :
Jesus is the way to heaven. Friends, if you sought a guide to a location you never visited before, you would not choose a guide who had never visited your desired destination, but you would seek one who knew the way. Jesus left the splendors of being with the Father and came in poverty to a world filled with sin. He seeks to guide us back to His home. In John 14, verse 3, Jesus said, And if I go and prepare a place for you... I will come again and receive you to myself, that where I am, there you may be also. Friends, He is the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus is the way out of sin, the way through difficulties, the way in with an abundant living, the way up to reach great potential, and the way to heaven. Friends, there's not a one of us that would not desire a heavenly home. With that being said, we are blessed to bring forth a new study, and it has been received so well that we want to continue offering this study as far as we can. And so we're going to defer to our J-Web of how you can receive this study by mail, but you can also access it online. So Jay's going to be a little bit more detailed here, and then I'll come back and we'll wrap up our study today.
SPEAKER 03 :
An additional Bible study by mail is now available from International Gospel Hour. It's titled, God and Man, How to be Saved from Sin. The study booklet addresses a number of questions about the salvation from God to man. And friends, like all materials, it's free. Call us toll-free at 855-444-6988 and leave your name, address, and just say, God and Man. Or you can go to our website at internationalgospelhour.com, click on the Contact tab, and leave us the same information, name, address, and type God and man in the message box. Another Bible study that is free from IGH. And our friends at godandman.com. That's god-and-man.com. And, you know, since you can't see it, let me just spell that out for you. We'd love to hear from you.
SPEAKER 01 :
Well, friends, we appreciate Jay painstakingly explaining that. And again, to receive that the easiest way, call us toll free at 855-444-6988. Leave your name and address and just say God and man. My, we have had a number of people request that study. One dear lady said, I'd like to see it and I want to share it with others. And we trust it will be of help to you. We're blessed to offer to you a number of free materials here from International Gospel Hour. Access the website at ApologeticsPress.org. And, of course, we're just blessed to be able to do that. We're thankful for so many that help us. I'm also thankful for my friend and brother Mark Posey, of whom I'm always finding to extend a debt of gratitude to him. Mark has a wonderful work called Pulpit Preview. Now, he put this together a number of years ago to assist preachers as they prepare to preach with just some thoughts or a rough outline or something along that line to prompt them with further study. And we find that tool an excellent help here at International Gospel Hour. So today, our study of the only way of salvation comes via our friend Mark Posey and his great work, Pulpit Preview. Now, Mark is a great encourager of our work here. He's an elder in the Lord's Church and the evangelist for the Winfield Church of Christ in Winfield, Alabama. He is very active in evangelism, especially in the war-torn country of the Ukraine. Now, Mark also adapted this work from the late Jerry Jenkins. And indeed, it is a blessing to bring forth material from Brother Jenkins, who has, of course, passed on. But like Abel of old, he still speaks Hebrews 11 and verse 4. And so how thankful we are to use that material. Friends, it doesn't matter who brings the material as long as it is biblically based. And we're thankful to share a number of outlines of preachers of days gone by, articles, studies, you name it. We try to share it here because it still teaches. It's still God's Word. Jesus said in John 12, 48, He that rejects me and receives not my words has one that will judge him. The word that I have spoken, the same will judge him in the last day. Friends, we want to be judged according to God's word and to know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. We'll continue our studies together at another time, and thank you for joining me today on the International Gospel Hour broadcast. I'm Jeff Archie, and friends, keep listening.

SPEAKER 01 :
Hi, this is Jay Webb for International Gospel Hour.
SPEAKER 02 :
Welcome to our broadcast today. For over 90 years, churches of Christ have proclaimed God's Word through our broadcasts. Just ahead is another Bible-based lesson with Jeff Archie of International Gospel Hour. Let's begin.
SPEAKER 03 :
Well, thank you to our J-Web, as always. Greetings to all of you. It's great having you with us. Without our listening audience, well, we would not have a lot in which to deal with. The Word of God is always wonderful in which we can study, but having you with us to join us for our studies, show us the interest that you have in the things that be of God. Thank you always for tuning in to International Gospel Hour and being one of our most precious listeners and supporters and encouragers of our work. Everything we offer here is absolutely free. We want to study the Word of God together and to make that available to you with no cost. Let's begin today with our reading of Hebrews 12, beginning with verse 3. For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as sons, My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by him. For whom the Lord loves, he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives. If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons. For what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful. Nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. And now verses 12 and 13 of Hebrews 12. Therefore, strengthen the hands which hang down and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed. Now let's talk about this lesson text of Hebrews 12, 3-13. First of all, the Lord's intent to chasten His children is motivated by His love. He wants the best for us. The Lord's lack of chastening His children would also show a lack of love. It wouldn't matter to Him what we did, but He loves us too much. When God chastens his children, verse 10 tells us that we partake of holiness, better living. In verse 11, one can partake of peace. That's a better mind. Verse 12, one partakes of attitude, a better disposition. And verse 13, one partakes of a better walk with the one divine. Now, friends, you see? Discipline is not always a bad word because it can get good results. That's the aim. You know, you think about it, friends. We are all disciplined. Chances are you were awakened by an alarm clock today. Well, that's discipline. You are required to do things at certain times. Discipline. You take medication at a certain time. That's being disciplined today. So, friends, don't miss this. Discipline is part of our lives, whether it is preventive or corrective. We're going to study further, well, we're going to study further a good word, discipline. But first, here is a special word for our Spanish friends.
SPEAKER 02 :
International Gospel Hour, in collaboration with SpanishBibleSchool.org, presents a biblical podcast for our Spanish-speaking friends. Please join Marlon Rotana for Christianos Fieles, also known as Faithful Christians, at your favorite podcast platform. That's Christianos Fieles with Marlon Rotana. You can also hear the broadcast at our website, internationalgospelhour.com.
SPEAKER 03 :
Friends, be sure you share that with your Hispanic friends, and that Christianos Files is available, especially at our website at internationalgospelhour.com. Now, let's talk about the definition of discipline. It's from a Latin word that means instruction given to a disciple. It is a treatment that will correct or punish, and it's necessary with and for instruction. So again, friends, it corrects or punishes, yes. But let's further look at this definition. It is training to act in accordance with rules. It's an activity or a regimen that develops or improves a skill. It's also punishment inflicted by way of correction and training, as we noticed. But the training is to improve our skills. So, friends, don't miss this. Discipline is not always a bad word. It is instructive for better results, it is constructive for better development, and it is corrective for better performance. I'll give you that again. Discipline is instructive for better results, it is constructive for better development, and it is corrective for better performance. I'm going to defer to a quote here by a beloved friend, Alan Hyers. And I want you to listen to the words of Brother Hyers. Brother Hyers served as a judge in the state of Tennessee courts. And we appreciate Brother Hyers and his friendship and encouragement at International Gospel Hour. He said the following, The father who does not discipline his child for running into the street or playing with a loaded gun is delinquent in his responsibility to the child. The discipline administered may be temporarily unpleasant both to the parent and the child, but it is done because of love of the child and for his protection and safety. When members of the church play with dangerous instrumentalities that may wreck their souls, it is woeful neglect to leave them alone. The extent of the discipline will be governed by the nature of the act and the attitude of the individual. To talk earnestly, pointedly, and privately with the individual may be sufficient to provoke repentance. If not, more stringent measure may be enacted. Alexander Campbell said, To cut off an offender is good, to cure him is better, but to prevent him from failing or falling is the best of all. So friends, from the very outset, we must note every aspect of discipline. Again, it's either instructive, constructive, or corrective. Now let's move from the definition to the direction of discipline. Where do we go for such directions? Well, our words will be, or rather, our lives will be disciplined by God's Word. In Matthew 4 and verse 4, Jesus said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. So, the Word of God is a book of discipline to correct the things in our lives and to instruct us in the good. In 1 Peter 2 and verse 2, the Bible says, As newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby. Children are disciplined, or when the child cries, the child is filled with milk, and then continues to move to solid food. It is a matter of the discipline, to see to the need, to construct, to correct. And when a child is hungry, we correct by feedings. It begins with the milk of the word and we grow therein. In 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17, all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for, now watch, correction, for instruction in righteousness. The end result, verse 17, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Friends, please recall that all instruction is discipline. Robert S. Ursary observed, In fact, in some degree every epistle of the New Testament is disciplinary in nature. Every single one necessitated learning and obedience on the part of Christians, not non-Christians. The epistles invariably mandated self-discipline first and discipline of others second, therefore or thereby making the church a soul-saving body for its own members and for the whole world which it was commissioned to evangelize. What a wonderful thought! And so for me to walk as a disciplined individual, I must adhere to God's word, for from it flows the love of God. 1 John 5.3 affirms, For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments, and His commandments are not grievous. So friends, I'm sure you would agree, we need to make certain we have disciplined lives. To make it instructive for better results, constructive for better development, and corrective for better performance. Friends, with that being said, we'd like to always encourage, before we leave our broadcast today, to guide you and to help you with some study material that will be of help to you, that help you or will help you with a disciplined life. Here is our J-Web with our online study of the Bible offer.

SPEAKER 01 :
Friends, let's talk about old things that must go. Now, I know sometimes when I say that, couples that have been married a long time, he'll look at her or she'll look at him, couples with great senses of humor. That is not what I'm referring to, friends. Let's talk about old things that have to go. Did you know 2 Corinthians 5 verse 17 says, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. Let's pick up with verse 18. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. That is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed unto us the word of reconciliation." Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Again, 2 Corinthians 5, 17-21. O friends, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. All things, friends, not a few. All things, and all means all. From verse 18 of 2 Corinthians 5, we see why all things are of God. But how does God move out the old things? Well, the word reconcile in this text is the key. The word reconcile simply means to change or exchange from enemy to friendship. Five times we noted that word used in that context. I appreciate the following from my brother in Christ and friend, Neal Pollard, for the following observations about the word reconcile. We change our lives and exchange the world for the man of reconciliation, that's Christ. Next, we change our lives and exchange the world for the message of reconciliation, the Word of God. Third, we change our lives and exchange the world for the ministry of reconciliation, We become servants. We live differently and such a great change. And fourth, we change our lives and exchange the world because of the mandate of reconciliation. A plea to ourselves and others. Be ye reconciled to God. Verse 20 of 2 Corinthians 5. Wow. The man of reconciliation, Christ, and the message of reconciliation, the word of God, the ministry of reconciliation, we become servants, and the mandate of reconciliation, a plea to ourselves and others to be reconciled to God. Thanks again to Neal Pollard for that awesome overview. Through God, friends, we move out the old things in our lives to be new in Jesus Christ. Here's another. Let's, another, or shall we get rid of something else? Old things that must go. How about the old serpent, Satan? That's what he's called in Revelation 12 and verse 9 and Revelation 20 and verse 2. He is a deceiver, the devil himself. He was a murderer from the beginning, John 8, 43 and 44. As a roaring lion, though, he walks about seeking those whom he may devour, 1 Peter 5, 8 and 9. You know, friends, whether one wants to admit it or not, it's one or the other. It's either Christ or the devil. And how we live decides which one remains and which one has got to go. Can we not see the obvious answer? The old serpent, Satan. He's got to go. Here's one more. The old man of sin. How is that old man of sin put away? Let's allow Paul to answer in Romans 6. Beginning with verse 1, he said, What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? Know you not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection, knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him. that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. You see, the Christian has put away the old man of sin through his baptism into Christ. And the Christian will keep the old man of sin away. Friends, that's why when we see texts such as Romans 6, 3-6, Acts 22, 16, Mark 16, verse 16, Acts 2, verse 38, and Galatians 3, verse 27, we see the importance of baptism. That destroys the old man of sin. Now, friends, people can flock off and get immersed all the time. But if one does not believe in Christ before their baptism, they're just put down a wet sinner or dry sinner and they're brought up a wet sinner. We want to base our faith in Christ and in God, for without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews 11, 6. We must repent of our sins. That's a command of Christ in Luke 13, 3. Part of the Great Commission in Luke 24, 44-47. As well as commanded and preached on the day of Pentecost when they were pricked in their hearts. The first thing they needed to do was repent. We know they believed they were there as Jews at the Feast of Pentecost. They had a faith in God. To confess our faith as Jesus commanded in Matthew 10, 32-33. as well as the eunuch as he confessed his faith in Christ in Acts 8 and verse 37. We must confess our faith in Christ and change our decision through repentance. Then we are baptized into Christ for the remission of our sins, and we put the old man of sin away. SPEAKER 01 :
Well, friends, I'm sure you would agree there are some old things that need to go. The old things, the sin of man, and the old serpent Satan that wants to keep those old things in our lives. So, yes, friends, there are old things that must go. Let's think about those things, friends, more so spiritually. I'm sure we have a lot of old things around our houses that we could probably move onward from. See, those are treasures upon earth that won't make a bit of difference in our salvation. But when we put away the old man of sin through obedience of the gospel, through faith, repentance, confession, and baptism, then we're able to press onward. So friends, we hope this study today has been of help to you. And we will continue our studies together at another time. Thank you for joining me today here from the International Gospel Hour. I'm Jeff Archie, and as always, friends, keep listening.
